Two years ago, two beautiful ladies discovered that they have something in common. As they bonded over statement jewels, Starbucks Refreshers and their “five-foot nothing” frames, they realized their friendship was the beginning of a life long journey. One day, they decided to start documenting their fashion inspiration by starting a blog. So, what’s the catch?- Being fashionably chic on a fashionably affordable budget. See how these girls are making it big in a city dominated by top tier designers and pretty price tags. Meet the beautiful Windy City Bloggers, Erica Ellis and Kelsey Rubin!
Name: Erica Ellis, Kelsey Rubin
Role: Fashion Bloggers
CollegeFashionista: When did you first decide to create Sequins Are A Girl’s Best Friend and what inspired the two of you to create it together?
Erica Ellis/Kelsey Rubin: Two years ago we became coworkers and we immediately bonded over everything fashion related. Our friendship took us through a journey of highs and lows within a very short time and our bond strengthened. We wanted to embark on an adventure together outside of the “black and white” world of our corporate work life; something that sparked our creativity and allowed us to paint outside the lines.
Starting a fashion blog seemed so foreign to us. It truly was built as a diary to document our favorite trends and daily outfit ideas to inspire friends, family and coworkers. Little did we know that it would grow into something so much more.
CF: What would you say makes your style and blog so unique?
EE/KB: The idea behind our blog is to inspire women to wear the latest trends in fashion, both in their professional and personal lives. We’re doing it all on a budget in a very expensive city. In fact, some of our favorites include T.J. Maxx, Kohl’s and Target—who knew!? Our trick is to invest in key statement pieces and pull the rest from clearance racks and our own wardrobes. The best part about our blog is that there are two of us: two minds, two ideas and two outfits behind every post.
CF: How would you describe your style(s)?
CF: What has been the biggest challenge in your career thus far?
EE/KB: The biggest challenge is certainly trying to figure out how to clock out of our corporate 9-5 jobs and clock into our blog from 5-9. It’s truly a full time job and I think we may have underestimated that.
CF: Any fashion icons or designers you two look up to?
CF: How would you say your personalities are reflected through your style and blog?
EE/KB: Our personalities shine through in our pictures because we haven’t figured out how to keep a straight face. We’re always laughing with (and at) each other. We truly balance each other out and keep one another grounded. It’s truly a beautiful thing and we are very blessed to have each other and the start of something great.
