Femininity and Beyoncé-esque women’s power are huge concepts right now within the fashion industry. It has brought on inspiration for sexy, empowering clothing made for the strong woman. Who doesn’t love that? Stylist, designer and store owner Niki Schwan focuses on giving women confidence through her designs and brands.
Name: Niki Schwan
Role: Store Owner
CollegeFashionista: What’s your go-to work outfit?
Niki Schwan: I personally designed a simple black tailored A-line dress, with a pleated skirt and crisp white cotton collar. Classic and simple; something my shop girls can move around in and be comfortable, while maintaining a professional fashion-forward edge.
CF: What brands does your store carry?
NS: ID Sarreiri (Italy), Maison Close & Les Jupons (France), Madame SuperTrash (Netherlands), Jane Woolrich & Lasvicious (from London), Alpana Neeraj (India), Mijanou (Australia), Laruicci, Laurel Dewitt and Keva J SwimWear (three amazing designers I have relationships with from NYC) & Ankh, Marianna Harutunian and Glynneth B, (from LA). For fall, we are excited to announce Jean Louis Sabaji, a Beruit based Lebanese designer and Beyond (a brand from Bulgaria).
CF: What style does your store attend to?
NS: Forever in pursuit of sexy. I created a space that exudes femininity, grace and luxury. I really wanted to find a space that felt like underground Paris. The product within the space mirrors these same qualities! The concept behind creating the store, was based on this amazing women’s luxury specialty product that I was continually finding from around the world, which is not readily available domestically, yet. Product that was once reserved for my celebrity clientele is now available to the public!
CF: Has social media helped with your store opening?
NS: Social media has been a relatively new tool for me, but it is an extremely powerful one, of course. During this early phase of this part of my brand, it is so important that all social media comes directly from my own voice. Which essentially means that when it comes to social media, I am more about quality then quantity.
CF: Who are your major clients as a stylist?
NS: As my brand grows, I am styling a bit less, especially when it comes to the celebrities. I have been somewhat of a go-to expert when a label signs a new female musician, and really enjoy the development part of helping an artist identify who they are as a brand and how that translates visually. That is far more exciting to me then just styling alone. Being able to choose the projects I am a part of is a huge blessing at this point of my career. I recently worked with a new girl group called GRL, as well as another girl group in London, Stooshe. As far celebrity clients, I have had throughout my career: Nicki Minaj, Scarlett Johansson, Lauren Conrad, Janina Gavankar, Keri Hilson, Mariah Carey and more!
