AROUND TOWN: Lilli Scott

Last fall, I had the honor of hearing Coco Rocha give an informative speech on social media advocacy and what it can accomplish. Using more than ten social media platforms, she has spoken out against countless issues in the realm of models’ rights. Thanks to her efforts, a law was passed in 2013 that now grants models under the age of 18 the same legal rights and protections that actors, singers and dancers hold.

I admire one of my best friends, Lilli Scott, for doing the same exact thing. Since I met her, I have known her to be a champion for mental health awareness through the organization To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA). She uses social media to promote TWLOHA, as well as expose others to a variety of bands, shops and your daily dose of creativity and positivity. She’s the coolest.

Name: Lilli Scott

Role: Fashion Merchandising Student

CollegeFashionista: So what exactly is TWLOHA and what is your role in it?

Lilli Scott: To Write Love On Her Arms is a non-profit that advocates treatment for mental health and issues like depression, addiction and anxiety. I’ve been involved with Kent University’s chapter since my freshman year and am currently an event planner. It’s important to have an open discussion and support for mental health in college because it’s such a stressful time in our lives. People should know there are ways to get help if they need it.

CF: In addition to social media, what other outlets have been successful in getting the story of TWLOHA out to the masses?

LS: TWLOHA also has a very inspirational blog. Music has always been a big part of it. They just had two events in LA and Orlando called Heavy and Light where artists played music and spread the message of hope. I’m sad I couldn’t go!

CF: Now that music was mentioned, what artist(s) has been on replay the most for you these past weeks?

LS:  The artists that I’ve been cycling through the most have been Brand New and Kings of Leon. I usually just find random playlists on Spotify or 8tracks!

CF: Has any musician’s style really caught your eye lately?

LS: FKA Twigs. She just put out a new video and it’s amazing and a little weird. I’m obsessed with her look and her voice, she’s so different.

CF: What current trend are you really digging, and what fashion item would you invest in if money weren’t an issue?

LS: I’m loving the “pixelated” hair dye that has been popping up, it looks so fun! I’d have any piece from one of my favorite designers Zana Bayne, she specializes in leather. All of her pieces are beautiful, but a practical one would be the signature bag.

Learn More: I found their 2015 calendarscoop neck shirt and this hoodie in TWLOHA’s awesome web store. Their web store makes it easy to show your support while finding workable pieces for your every wardrobe!
