Who says a financial student can’t also be the chicest girl walking the streets of Chicago? When she’s not studying at DePaul University, Kiana Chan keeps busy as a commercial and editorial print model. Between all different kinds of shoots – accessories, footwear and custom-made shorts to name a few—the Chicago native takes her experiences from behind the camera and incorporates a distinct elegance in every outfit.
Name: Kiana Chan
CollegeFashionista: How did you develop a love for the fashion industry?
Kiana Chan: I was introduced to modeling at the very young age of five. I was originally signed with Lily’s Talent Agency who led me into the right direction and was always seeking work for me. As I grew older, I developed a greater sense of style and appreciation of the modeling industry.
CF: What are you doing to exercise that passion?
KC: I have been very fortunate to work with Chicago based designers over the years. I have worked with Christopher Augmon and his luxury jewelry and handbag line, SaraRose on Oak and her clothing line, Dirty Rotten Vintage and her vintage shorts line, and many more artists. Most of the editorial shoots that I have partaken in were freelance opportunities. My current agent, Ambassador Talents, usually sends me on commercial print shoots, which I also love.
CF: Do you have a favorite shoot or experience so far?
KC: Every shoot that I have done so far has been fun. My favorite shoot thus far was with an online store called Yellow Plum. The shoot was held in a forest preserve on a bike path. We saw a man riding his bike and thought it would be perfect for the shot. We asked him if we could borrow the bike and he looked at us as if we were crazy. Long story short, that shot came out to be one of the best.
CF: What is the most exciting aspect of the Chicago fashion scene?
KC: Chicago designers are laid back. When I work with Chicago based designers, they are often very fun. For me would be the shoot, being able to play around with different poses and joke around with the designer during a shoot yet deliver what they are looking for at the same time is amazing.
CF: How would you describe your style in three words?
KC: Classic, elegant and preppy. Almost my entire closet is filled with Ralph Lauren, Zara and Ann Taylor. I like to keep things simple, yet stylish.
