San Luis Obispo local Jose Retena is about to enter his junior year at The Art Institute of California, San Francisco where he is studying fashion design.
Name: Jose Retena
Role: Fashion Design Student
CollegeFashionista: What initially sparked your interest with fashion?
Jose Retena: In middle and high school I really enjoyed the theater arts. That being said, I wasn’t all that good at acting. I soon realized that I was pretty great at costuming, which made me really happy because that meant I could still work in theater. Also I’ve always thought of myself as a trendy person.
CF: What is your favorite part about fashion design?
JR: The variation of everyone’s style. I love the fact there is really no strict definition of what a “Fashionista” is. Fashion can be anything.
CF: What do you like the most about studying fashion design at The Art Institute of California, San Francisco?
JR: San Francisco is such an amazing, unique and modern city. I draw a lot inspiration from the city itself. Also there are so many fashionable people there!
CF: What is your favorite summer trend?
JR: I really like boat shoes. I think pairing them with any outfit can really give a “John F. Kennedy” vibe, which I am really into. I also like wearing baseball hats with a put together outfit, if that makes sense. I think it shows people that just because I’m into fashion, it doesn’t mean I can’t like sports. As for girls, I really like rompers for some reason. I just think they are so cute.
CF: What fashion rule do you always break?
JR: I’ve always thought not being able to wear white after Labor Day was really dumb.
