Five years ago, Jake Corrent founder and designer of Rare Society and his current business partner Kyle Brown were on a road trip to California. This is where they discussed the dream of owning their own clothing line. It started out as Jake selling T-shirts out of his backpack, to recently becoming a brand that now has shipped to various continents. For these two young entrepreneurs, their dreams are now coming true.
Name: Jake Corrent
CollegeFashionista: Who is your style icon?
Jake Corrent: I’m going to have to say Nathan McCallum. I’ve been following him on pretty much every form of social media (IG: @isnathan) for a couple years now and it’s awesome to see how far he has come in the fashion industry. He’s extremely diverse in his outfits and that’s really admirable. I’m also extremely envious of his mustache.
CF: What inspired you to start your own brand?
JC: I started out by selling T-shirts out of my backpack on campus. I realized the brand was something that was catching on so my business partner Kyle Brown and I decided to focus our efforts and kick it up a notch. Here we are today, designing and manufacturing threads that we had only dreamt about. One of my biggest inspirations to start the brand was Jaxin Hall—owner of both Love Before Glory and Key Street. I always admired his talent and work ethic. I remember camping out late at night for his online releases. It’s a dream of mine to be able to work with him one day.
CF: Where do you hope to see your designs going in the future?
JC: I believe our brand has grown and evolved a lot already since the first run of T-shirts in 2012. There is less of a focus on large graphic designs and in it’s place came more attentiveness to fabrics and close attention to details. We now have the capability to do less embellishment and make our own true “Rare Society” pieces. Next month we release our brand’s new summer line, the Dauntless Collection. Dauntless means being fearless, bold and determined. This ties in perfectly with our “resilient & relentless” slogan. We believe the name not only reflects the mood and feel of these new items, but the entire brand as a whole and we hope that everyone else appreciates them just as much as we do.
CF: What is your favorite fashion city?
JC: Aside from the obvious being New York, I’ve always admired the uniqueness and roots of San Francisco. There a multiple brands that I have huge respect for that are established in the city such as Benny Gold, Black Scale, Levi’s, The Hundreds – the list goes on. It’s one of my personal dreams for Rare Society to have the resources and means to open up a brick and mortar retail location there.
CF: What purchases can you always find on your credit card?
JC: I’d definitely have to say shoes. Air maxes; strictly 90’s and 1’s, Roshes, Vans and a few Retro Jordans are my personal favorites to collect. But one item that will always be on my credit card statement are chicken shawarmas – I’m absolutely obsessed.
