Alex and Ani bracelets, maxi dresses, watches and strappy shoes all make up the leading trends of the summer. Everyone seems to have a love hate relationship with trends because everyone wants to have trendy things, but no one wants to seem exactly like everyone else. People want to make the trend—not follow it. This can put stores in a state of limbo as they make an effort to have every trendy item, while also supplying the necessary things to make the trends unique to each person. One of my favorite boutiques, Dress and Dwell, does this perfectly. The two store buyers handpick items that are trendy, but ensure that they offer accessories to give people endless possibilities. Dress and Dwell is the perfect place to put a unique spin on popular trends so anyone can be a trendsetter.
Name: Britni Lynn Knable
Role: Manager and Assistant Buyer, Dress and Dwell
CollegeFashionista: How long has Dress and Dwell been open?
Britni Lynn Knable: This September it will be three years.
CF: What makes the boutique different from others?
BLK: Everything in the store is handpicked by Amanda and me. We travel to all the different markets, home markets and fashion markets in places like New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Chicago.
CF: How do you and Amanda decide what pieces to choose for Dress and Dwell?
BLK: We look at a lot of trends and definitely focus on what’s on-trend. We handpick what we like from each designer and each company.
CF: What is one of your favorite items from the store right now?
BLK: I would have to say Bourbon and Boweties right now, just because Carly, the designer, is awesome. Bourbon and Boweties are fun. They become addicting. We also have Alex and Ani, a charity based brand. At first, we didn’t know if we wanted to have them, but then we decided to go with it. We listen to what our customers want, too. We have a ton of customers ask about Alex and Ani bracelets because they go well with the Bourbon and Boweties.
CF: What trends have played and will continue to play a big role in the store?
BLK: Neon was really big for the summer, and traveling into fall stripes are big again. We are also getting in a lot of vests like the crew style vest.
CF: What new additions can customers expect from the store?
BLK: We did shoes in the very beginning and we started drifting off, but we are now bringing a lot of cute boots in. We also added our Curve line, because we want to make clothes for Fashionistas in any size.
