AROUND TOWN: Delaney Dunkley

In college there’s a place for everyone: there’s a place for the sorority girls, the creative artists, the academic wizards and even the sporty football types. What’s really special about being on campus is that you can do it all. This week, I’m highlighting a Fashionista that not only tailgates with the best of them, but is also working as a student designer for the upcoming student led runway show. Taking time out of her sorority and academic life to create five looks that best demonstrate her aesthetic, she is sure to get some noteworthy praise around campus.

Name: Delaney Dunkley

Role: Student Designer

CollegeFashionista: What made you want to enter the world of retail and design?

Delaney Dunkley: I have been intrigued by the world of fashion and retail since I was young. I’ve always loved to shop and sew. When I was a freshman in high school I was finally able to take a fashion merchandising course and this really opened my eyes to the fact that I want my future career to be in the fashion industry.

CF: Have you ever created looks for a runway show before?

DD: I have taken many sewing classes but didn’t decide to put my skills to the test and create a line of my own until this year. I will be participating in the USCFW Student Showcase.

CF: What inspired you when creating these looks?

DD: I decided to make my garments out of recycled newspaper (the Daily Gamecock and The Odyssey) to make a comment on sustainability and going green here at USC!

CF: Moving forward, what is your dream career in the fashion industry?

DD: My dream career in the fashion industry would ultimately be to work for URBN as an international trend analyst.

Learn More: You can see all of Delaney’s finished pieces at the Fashion Week student led fashion show on March 25 at 701 Whaley.
