At a small liberal arts college like Vassar, creativity and inspiration are everywhere. Students are constantly finding new ways to express themselves and share their interests with others. This is where Contrast comes into play. Contrast is one of the coolest student-run publications at Vassar because it allows students to engage in a wide variety of artistic styles and media in order to inspire others and promote art on campus. I got to interview the magazine’s editor, who showed up for our meeting wearing an amazing leather jacket, a chic dress and some killer combat boots.
Name: Rachel Garbade
Role: Editor-in-Chief, Contrast
CollegeFashionista: How did you get involved with Contrast?
Rachel Garbade: Freshman year I found out about it at the Activities Fair and I became a photographer for Contrast. I liked how even if you were a freshman you could have a big part in the process.
CF: What is the concept behind the magazine?
RG: It’s Vassar’s art and style magazine. We aim to highlight the unique styles on campus but also the individual lifestyles on campus. We’re always trying to find clubs or unique groups to highlight and as much art as possible.
CF: What is your favorite part of working on the magazine?
RG: I think the best part is the launch party at the end because you get to see all the work you put together and all the students getting excited about it. I also like interacting with different clubs that I wouldn’t normally interact with.
CF: What inspires your personal style?
RG: I’m big on Tumblr so I see a lot of fashion blogs there. I’m also inspired by Vassar students . I go for simplicity and comfort but with a refined edge, somewhere between preppy and hipster.
CF: What sparked your interest in photography?
RG: I think it started in middle school. I liked the idea of capturing a moment and having it forever. I got my first real camera in high school and I loved capturing moments and sharing them with others.
Learn More: Contrast recently held its fall fashion show on campus at the Francis Lehman Loeb Art Center. It will host its winter launch party on December 4th. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out its blog!
