The band T-shirt: a staple of many college kid’s wardrobes. As an avid music listener, I have always found a vital part of my style to be band T-shirts. Merchandise is an extremely important marketing tactic for those who are in a touring band. To make sales grow, good designs are needed. Chris Dragics, guitarist and cofounder of the Columbus metal band Legion, has a say in what vision he has for his band. I was intrigued to learn how musicians put their heads together when creating shirts and items for their fans.
Name: Chris Dragics
Role: Guitarist and Cofounder of Legion
CollegeFashionista: What image do you want to convey with Legion’s merchandise?
Chris Dragics: The image we try to convey with our merchandise is definitely a darker one, considering most of our music is pretty dark. However, not all of our shirts have that typical dark, metal image. We have printed a few tie-dye shirts and the new logo we have been using has a pretty “groovy” feel.
CF: How does the whole design process work in deciding what to sell, and do you want to be involved with more of the designing process?
CD: Deciding what merchandise to sell is fairly simple. We will choose what we want to print depending on the time of year: T-shirts and shorts for warmer weather, hoodies and long sleeves for winter. Then, all of us usually pick out three to five designs depending on the size of the order. We are pretty involved with the whole design process. We have an idea of what we want to put on the shirts, and then we choose who creates the designs. The only way we could be more involved is if we were actually drawing up the designs ourselves; which is something that we have talked about doing more than a few times.
CF: How would you describe your style in general and when you are touring across the country?
CD: My style is generally pretty boring. Depending on the weather, I usually wear a random band T-shirt with shorts or jeans. I wear a lot of beat up Vans and a hat if I am not up to making my hair look presentable. My style doesn’t change much when I’m traveling across the country.
CF: What is your must-have clothing item while you and the band are out on the road?
CD: There are a few must-have items to have with you on the road. A good amount of underwear and socks is pretty important! A belt is crucial too, and easy to forget at home. Comfortable shorts for long van rides and a hat for wrecked hair are two of my go-to clothing articles when touring.
