For the last six months I’ve been a sales associate or boptart at Madison’s stylish boutique, Bop. This gem, a favorite amongst Madison’s Fashionistas, is located just off of State Street, close to both Capitol Square and the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. I sat down with the store’s manager, Cassie Hartmann, to bring you the details and history of Bop, the store that started it all.
Name: Cassie Hartmann
Role: Store Manager
CollegeFashionista: How is Bop a unique boutique?
Cassie Hartmann: Bop is a customer-centric boutique that provides a comprehensive assortment of contemporary women’s apparel and accessories for every lifestyle. Via its unique relationship to Shopbop, Bop blurs the line between global and local fashion. There is only one Bop store in the world, and it’s conveniently located in Madison, Wisconsin.
CF: Can you explain Bop’s history and it’s relation to Shopbop?
CH: Bop launched its first and only brick-and-mortar store in 1999, offering primarily designer denim. A year later, the Shopbop website launched. Today, Shopbop sets the standard for customer service and defines global style with daily editorials and a limitless selection of high-end merchandise. Essentially, Bop is the home store where all of the magic started.
CF: What are some of the designers and brands that the store carries?
CH: At its core, Bop is a denim shop carrying brands such as AG Adriano Goldschmied and rag & bone/JEAN. We offer an array of accessories and handbags from brands like Tory Burch and Marc by Marc Jacobs, as well as a huge selection of clothing. We carry basics from Splendid and Rails, trend pieces from Free People and BB Dakota, and cocktail dresses from Parker and Clover Canyon. We also carry socially conscious brands like Henry & Belle and Threads 4 Thought that donate profits to a variety of charitable projects.
CF: Which summer trends will you be wearing these next few months?
CH: This summer is all about translating the festival fashion trend into chic everyday style. I’m in love with plaids, chambrays and boho florals, especially when paired with distressed denim of any variety—jeans, shorts, skirts, vests or jackets. Outfits can be elevated with statement gladiators or made effortlessly cool with slip-on sneakers. A sophisticated leather backpack, like the Rebecca Minkoff “Julian” style, is also a must. (Honorable mentions: overalls, crop tops and tea-length skirts.)
Learn More: To stay up to date with all things Bop, be sure to follow the store on social media. Check out Bop’s Facebook page and follow the handle @bop_store on Twitter and Instagram. Keep your eyes peeled because in just a few short weeks, Bop will be having their largest sale of the year. The Maxwell Street Days sale, will run July 17-20. You can score fabulous deals on must-have items like rag & bone booties and 3.1 Phillip Lim bags. Mark your calendars Fashionistas/os because this is an event that you don’t want to miss out on.
