AROUND TOWN: Blue Delta Jean Company

Oxford, Mississippi has a hidden gem on its historical square. Perfectly placed in the alley of S 11th St. is this boutique sized shop that exudes character as you walk in. Denim and thread line the walls, and initially you’re just curious as to what Nick Weaver does with all of this. Nick Weaver and Josh West started Blue Delta Jean Company five years ago, and have had a store in Oxford for one year. This company prides itself on only using 100 percent USA made denim and material for their custom made jeans. BDJ gets their denim from a mill in Little Field, Texas. All cotton, zippers and buttons are not mass produced or imported. Owners, Weaver and West, want to keep everything one of a kind. At 260 dollars per pair, their clients have three weights to choose from—10, 12 and 14 ounces of raw denim. Their clientele is shockingly 80 percent men and 20 percent women. I caught up with a BDJ sales associate who is fluent in denim and knows just how to get you into a new pair.

Name: Mary Claire Hamner

Role: Sales Associate, Blue Delta Jean Company

CollegeFashionista: What makes Blue Delta Jean Company so unique?

Mary Claire Hamner: Everything is custom made for our clients. Measurements are taken inside of the store, and they are sent straight to our manufacturers in Tupelo, MS. We have a guy who drafts up the patterns. We keep all patterns on file for our clients for the future if changes need to made.

CF: Why do you find it special to work here?

MCH: I started as a customer. I’ve never had a pair of jeans to fit me. I’m 5’11 and a beanpole. Instantly, I loved Nick and the atmosphere of this place. After receiving my jeans and being so satisfied with them, I was offered a position in the store. I accepted, and now I’m a testimonial of how great the product is. I’ve built strong bonds with the clients, and it’s just fun and fulfilling working here.

CF: What do you think keeps clients ordering?

MCH: We build confidence. We build strong relationships. No one wants to voluntarily come in and get their measurements taken. So we let our clients know that they are safe here, and we’re just here to help them find their perfect jean.

CF: What would be the perfect denim weight and style for spring?

MCH: 10 oz. and the white wash is perfect for spring. You can transition them into fall and winter.
