AROUND TOWN: Abby Rogers

Choosing a subject to major in for four years right out of high school can be a daunting task. Especially so when you are a student that excels academically in a few different areas. Not only are you someone who excels academically, but you also like to work with people, are creative and enjoy a challenge. For all those that think you may fall under this category, you are not alone.

Name: Abby Rogers

Role: Fashion Merchandising Student, University of Delaware

CollegeFashionista: When you were choosing a college major, why did you choose Fashion Merchandising?

Abby Rogers: When I was younger, I thought if you wanted to have a career in fashion you had to choose design, but when I found out that schools offered fashion merchandising I felt like that was the right fit for me. I love the way fashion can inspire people and how you can express yourself through what you’re wearing, which for me is usually a flannel, jeans and duck boots. I also originally wanted a career in something mathematical, but when mixing that with something I really enjoyed, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to major in fashion merchandising

CF: What was the largest shock to you, concerning the major, once you were actually taking classes?

AR: One shock I had was that we actually had to learn how to sew seams! I had never sewn before in my life and it was a bit of a struggle at first but then I got the hang of things. Another thing that shocked me was that although we weren’t design majors, we had to learn all different types of terms for clothing. For example: all the different names for shirt sleeves and shirt collars.

CF: What are you involved in on campus that is related to your major?

AR: I am a member of the Fashion Merchandising Club and I am a style scout for The Hunt App at UD.

CF: What is your dream job once you graduate?

AR: I have changed my mind so many times about what I want to do once I graduate. My original thoughts were being a buyer for a major designer and working in New York City. After taking classes at UD, my teachers have presented so many other options. Being a part of The Hunt has also influenced my decision. So now I think my dream would to be involved in public relations or social media but still be stationed in New York City.
