ACCESSORIES REPORT: Comme Des Italiens

Accessories Report

New York City has turned me into a hat person. When I first arrived here almost four years ago, I wouldn’t be caught dead in a chapeau unless it was -10 degrees out and my ears simply could not stand to be uncovered. I gradually began to accept slouchy beanies, which transitioned me into snapbacks and summer appropriate fedoras, and am now in a phase where my black bowler hat is one of my most prized accessories. Before I saw this Fashionista, I was perfectly content with my collection of head-cozies, yet her shiny, vibrant and chic style made me realize what I was missing: a Borsalino-inspired brimmed hat.

Not only does a black wide-brimmed hat add a refined finesse to any outfit (no matter the style), but it is also the perfect accessory to wear during the transition from winter to spring. Its felt-like material will keep your ears warm during those lingering chilly days, and its wide brim will shade your face from the sun as the warmer days become more numerous. A tad more formal than a baseball cap, yet less quirky than a bowler hat, a Borsalino hat is definitely going to be added to my wardrobe within the coming month.

Because this Fashionista’s ensemble is composed of a printed shirt, shiny leggings, a wooly coat and shiny bag, a single unifying element is necessary in order for it to tie together. Her Comme des Garçons Converse do the trick perfectly, as the hearts on their sides pull in the red from her shirt, the white grounds the entire outfit and their relaxed sneaker style contrasts the sparkly and glam fabric of her tote. The eyes on the hearts also add a bit of playfulness to the outfit, which would be lost had she opted for black booties or ballet flats.

By choosing to infuse her outfit with a texturally rich coat, pattern-clad shirt and shiny blue leggings, this Fahsionista’s outfit screams spring-ready and is a welcome deviance from the monochromatic outfits that are still flooding NYU’s campus.

Spotted: Marios Schwab sent models topped with exaggerated brimmed hats down the runway for his fall/winter 2013 show in London.
