For as long as I can remember, my mom has been rocking sassy tights. Fishnets, argyle, sheer or sparkly — you name it, the drawers of her closet have seen it. All winter long, while most mothers hide under khakis and jeans, my Fashionista mama pulls on her Hues and sets off for work. This post goes out to her and her fabulous gams for teaching me that showing off your spunk, and your legs, is always in style.
What I love most about this Fashionista’s look is that the tights really take center stage. I mean how often do we wake up and decide we want to build an outfit around our hosiery? Considering I get fully dressed before I have a single sip of coffee, I doubt it would ever cross my mind. But I think it’s a brilliant idea. Without the tights, her outfit would just be a basic black look. The peacock feathers add a pattern, a pop of color and a funky surprise that not only complete her outfit, but really make it what it is.
One of the best things about tights is that not only is there an incredible variety available, but across the board, they’re a very affordable accessory. This is excellent news for college students pinching pennies, which is basically all of us. Use a new pair of stockings as a way to give your winter wardrobe a little end of the season lift without breaking the bank.
For a steal, you can’t go wrong with Chez Target or the Gap. Throw your favorite colored or basic pair under a cute pair of shorts for a great transitional look. My personal favorite brand is HUE; it’s middle ground in terms of price and has a ton of really cool options. Multi Net Tights would be great under just about anything. They can be worn on their own or layered over opaque tights when you need an extra layer of protection from the cold. ASOS also earns points in my book for their witty legwear. These faux sock stockings take the cake in my book and would be a playful addition to any everyday look. But never fear, where there’s a designer, there’s always a splurge awaiting. I adore these Wolford buckle tights because well, there’s nothing else like them. They nod toward the hot lace-up sandals we’re seeing for spring. Betsey Johnson is one last designer I would keep in mind while hunting for tights. Her designs never cease to surprise across the board, and her sexy hosiery is no exception.
Spotted: Cynthia Rowley created veritable works of art in the form of tights for her fall 2009 ready-to-wear collection. Sequin lovers feast your eyes.
