CollegeFashionista London Fashion Week Recap

From the Editor

“I think London Fashion Week is the most avant-garde of fashion weeks.”

These were the first words I heard as I walked into the BFC Courtyard Show Space at Somerset House during autumn/winter 2013 London Fashion Week. Everyone from iconic fashion magazine editors (Anna Wintour!!!!) to street style photographers, fashion bloggers to haute couture aficionados milled around the square in all their chic and trendy glory. The excitement was palpable and the avant-garde style was obvious. People were dressed to be photographed and, boy, did I see the most unique and wonderfully artistic array of outfits.

I was asked to photograph ten looks from London Fashion Week and write a short blurb on each, so here they are.

Look 1: I loved this Fashionisto’s sweater! It was such a statement piece with all sorts of interesting gizmos and gadgets sprinkled across the front. Also, take heed to his DSLR camera, a London Fashion Week necessity! Everyone in the courtyard had a DSLR in hand or around their necks. London Fashion Week is all about getting photos of the most fashion-conscious cats around town, so a DSLR camera is a must. Plus, it doesn’t make a shabby accessory either!

Look 2: What blew my mind about this outfit is the fact that the base of the ensemble consisted of rolled-up skinny sweatpants and an oversized red T-shirt. What?! Whoever thought that such a combo could look so cool? Well, this Fashionista proved that such a fusion CAN look trendy! So, all you sweatpant-loving college kids better take notes! All you have to do is buy some skinny sweatpants, roll them up and pair them with some statement shoes, like her metallic silver flat platform shoes, and you have a girls’ night in outfit that is also London Fashion Week-worthy!

Look 3: This hip pair made the third look. Look how cute they are! I am always impressed when a girl can wear overalls and not look like she is about to milk a cow. This Fashionista, however, does so flawlessly by wearing black leggings underneath, a leather jacket on top, Dr. Martens-esque red boots and accessorizing with an oversized black infinity scarf. Her friend, not to be overshadowed by her country-meets-urban-chic look, dressed very California cool with his plum red beanie, fur-collared brown leather jacket and stylishly simple T-shirt and jeans.

Look 4: I am struck with jealously when I see someone clashing patterns in an outfit so brilliantly, so I was green with envy when I spotted this Fashionista. Usually, we are taught to balance out wild with basic, but this Fashionista successfully rebels against the rule by pairing her tie-dye leggings with a colorfully-patterned cardigan. The purple, jeweled turban on top is a nice touch and I absolutely love the pink hair. This garb screamed street style photographer’s dream!

Look 5: Clashing patterns seemed to be the “in” thing at London Fashion Week. This Fashionisto does so amazingly with his Aztec print sweater and plaid scarf. Also, note his Nike running shoes. I’ve noticed that wearing Nike running shoes was quite a popular fad amongst Londoners, and it definitely looks good when worn correctly. Try it out if you feel like jumping on the bandwagon of new trends!

Look 6: I loved this look because it highlights how fashion is art. This Fashionisto embodies the aforementioned avant-garde aspect of London Fashion Week. Everything in his outfit, his black flower headband, scarf-as-headwrap, Oriental-inspired gown and leopard print pumps, was so creatively assembled and unique. I really appreciated the gown because it affirms that Asian culture is making its way into haute couture, which means BIG things for Asian designers!

Look 7: This outfit was just so fun, I couldn’t resist snapping a shot of it! This Fashionisto’s jumpsuit was infused with the bright colors that filled the BFC Courtyard Show Space. And how awesome are his silver metallic hightops with neon green laces?

Look 8: I immediately noticed this look while I walked down the street towards Somerset House. I mean, it was hard NOT to spot this get-up. The loud red flower on this Fashionista’s sweater is perfect for catching London Fashion Week street photographers’ eyes, and her leather pants are the right kind of slick to creatively contrast the laid-back quality of her sweater.

Look 9: These two were such a style power couple! Their outfits were made to be photographed with all the lively colors swirling throughout. I adored the Fashionisto’s long and brightly-patterned vest and the Fashionista’s red leather skirt (Leather skirts are making a big comeback this coming season!) and John Lennon-inspired sunglasses. The hats and sneakers also added some street suave to their attire. The camera absolutely loved all the colors and blends of styles in these two’s ensembles, so follow these in vogue steps if you have an affinity for taking pictures!

Look 10: This Fashionisto color blocks like a pro! You wouldn’t expect blue and orange to go so well until seeing this fashionable fellow. The best part is his outfit’s ability to retain a slick and chic look with the very street beanie atop his head. Try combining a beanie with fancy attire for a look that catches people’s eyes at London Fashion Week
