This week, students were back into the bundled up look. All those puffy coats, boots, scarves and hats decided to reappear. The warm weather last week was a complete tease for students at Iowa State University. I sought to find a Fashionista/o on campus without the same “winter wardrobe.”
When I saw this Fashionista in my classroom I knew I had to grab her after class. Her outfit caught my eye immediately because of her red and white striped top. It was not just the prominent striped print that caught my eye; the ruffles on her shoulders instantly made me think the 1980s. Don’t you remember the shoulder pads? Brings me back to my grandmother’s closet! Every suit, jacket and dress she had had those squishy, triangle shaped pads sewn into the shoulders. I remember thinking it was a goofy look as a child, but now we see more and more of it around. This Fashionista’s top did not have pads sewn in, but the way the ruffles are placed and sewn on creates the presence of peaking shoulders.
This Fashionista felt audacious when she put her wardrobe together. After picking out her striped print shirt, she put on some trousers complete with a contrasting herringbone print. These trousers are great for class; they are stylish with the high waistband, yet comfortable enough to wear around campus. Mixing prints or patterns is an ongoing trend that is very striking. It adds different elements to the wardrobe: color and variation. Having variety in your closet is one of the prime assets to becoming a Fashionista/o. Check out these printed trousers—they would be perfect for the upcoming spring season.
This Fashionista also decided to complement her ensemble with a simple silver necklace and black belt for her accessories. Since she already had the emphasis on her contrasting prints, she did not want to take away from her chosen outfit. But why not confidently add in a solid colored belt? Mustard yellow or royal blue would both be daring choices. It would give the ensemble and even wilder spin! Can’t forget to mention her flats! Simple and sweet pinpoints these shoes exactly. These flats can even be worn in the upcoming spring months.
Finally, why not top off your wardrobe like this Fashionista and add in a shade of deep red lipstick. Brighten up that smile and walk with confidence to class!
