More recently than ever before, being comfortable has become the number one priority when searching through my wardrobe every morning. Maybe it’s the stress of trying to get my life together now that a year of college is under my belt, or maybe it’s just my Netflix addiction allowing me to realize that “lounging around” clothes trump all. Unfortunately, along with the comfy look come terms such as sloppy, lazy or careless. These are definitely not the looks we are trying to achieve. I used to believe that beauty was pain, but I have slowly come to the realization that being comfortable and cute is not as hard as I thought.
Coming across this Fashionista was the answer to all of my questions involving elegance and comfort. Before discussing her perfect accessory choice, I’d like to take time to show appreciation for her shift dress. Ah yes, the shift dress. It’s the fashion world’s way of hiding a food baby. It’s a cute and casual dress with no defined waist, thus allowing it to drape straight down over your body. The only problem with these dresses is that they are known to make us resemble potato sacks, once again reinforcing that comfortable leads to sloppy. However, I was able to stumble across a fashion-forward female that proved this theory wrong.
This brings me to the accessory that makes this look possible—a belt at the waist. Without it, her body would be a rectangle and the proportions would be all wrong. With it, she is able to stay cool, comfy and keep her gorgeous figure. Her wedges lengthen her legs while her aviator sunglasses add a cool edge. Everything ends up back at her belt though, for it is the centerpiece of the ensemble.
Looking for a belt that can add shape to anything? Try this neutral piece. For a little bit of vintage character, take a look at this belt. Finally, if you’re the girl that always needs a few jewels, here is the belt for you. We often find pieces we like that just don’t seem to fit us right. Luckily, the use of a belt at your waist can be slimming or add curves depending on the placement.
How To: Maxi dresses have been “in” for quite some time now, but depending on your build, they can sometimes seem baggy and you may get lost in the fabric. For your next day out on the town, try a maxi with a belted waist, a pair of your most comfortable sandals and a practical tote bag. It’s the perfect summer mix of comfort and style.
