ALL IN THE DETAILS: Subtle Style

As you’ve probably heard a million times before, it can be the little things that matter the most, and there’s no exception when it comes to style. Although it’s great to have one bold statement piece to your outfit that catches everyone’s eye, something new to try is smaller statements such as pops of colors, micro-patterns-or even better, both. Mixing patterns has been a big trend that can sometimes be hard to pull off–but by mixing subtle patterns and designs, you really can’t go wrong.

The greatest thing about the trend of mixing patterns is that you can really do this with any type of look, and you can choose any piece of printed clothing. Although this outfit featured a patterned shirt and statement shoes, you could choose to wear patterned pants, a printed jacket or even detailed accessories! Whatever your style is, you can definitely incorporate in subtle details.

This Fashionisto decided to make a simple and comfortable outfit trendy by mixing a microprint in a neutral color with a pop of red in his shoes. He chose a patterned top that displayed a small polka-dot print and added a pop of color with his Comme des Garçons heart-printed Converse. The mix of patterns and designs works well because they are both so subtle that, while both can stand out on their own, they can also bring attention to one another. Also, the classic button-down and skinny jean combo made the look perfect for everyday wear.

How To: Want to pull off the pattern-mixing trend? Pick your favorite pattern in a smaller print–stripes, polka dots or even floral–and pair it with your favorite accessory that features a bright color. Try it with your shoes or even a hat! Keep your look classic by choosing pieces with a classic silhouette and you’re ready to go.
