ALL IN THE DETAILS: South Africa-Inspired Details

What do you wear on the hottest summer day in New York City? I’ve said it all summer long, and I’ll keep saying it: keep it simple. It feels like it’s 100 degrees outside in New York, and throwing on a simple dress and adding accessories is the best way to go. I hate summer and the heat because it doesn’t allow me to add depth to my outfits. I enjoy wearing blazers, layers, boots, etc. Until that weather comes back around, simple outfits and extreme detailing is in. This Fashionista summed up the perfect style for a scorching, hot summer day.

Fresh off her six-month study abroad program in South Africa, this Fashionista accessorized with all of the handmade jewelry she collected from her trip. This Fashionista mentioned that her fringe sandals, her bag, her watch and even her statement rings were all brought back from her amazing trip. After experiencing a different culture, her trip has inspired her summer style, especially on a hot day like today that is so similar to Africa’s heat. The simple shift dress worn by this traveling Fashionista kept her comfortable and cool for her internship. The dress is so basic; however, she knew how to accessorize.

Her mini, South African made bag added a chic look to the dress and looked great with her fringe sandals, which she also found on her trip. My favorite part of her outfit was the soda can top handmade necklace. This necklace gave the outfit a special uniqueness I’ve never seen from a Fashionista.

The details of this outfit make it so original, especially because it was all South African-inspired and handmade. I admire this Fashionista for allowing her experience abroad to reflect through her fashion. Every accessory, except for her fun shaped sunglasses, came from Africa and she definitely turned her simple shift dress look into a unique one.

How To: While you may not be able to go to South Africa to obtain handmade, unique accessories, you are able to still emulate this look. Chose a neutral colored shift dress, and accessorize in the most unique way you can. Your uniqueness may come from a belt, a cute, mini bag like this Fashionista’s or even a stacked arm of bracelets.
