ALL IN THE DETAILS: Plaid With A Twist

March 24th, 2015 at 2:00am

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve re-watched Clueless and Gossip Girl just to drool over Cher Horowitz and Blair Waldorf’s preppy, yet chic, style. From Cher’s iconic yellow plaid blazer and pleated skirt, to Blair’s…well, everything. To name a few, the most memorable pieces for me were her plaid blouse, capelet, coat and lastly, her headband!

Plaid is a pattern that’s an ideal match for basically anything, especially the ’90s classics, such as overalls, baggy jeans and leather jackets (and don’t forget those Calvin Klein underwear!). Paul & Joe’s ingenue-with-edge attitude presented in their 2015 fall ready-to-wear collection showcased a number of items with the most ubiquitous patterns in modern fashion. Exhibit A: the Fashionista I spotted this week! Her schoolgirl meets grunge style illustrates how playing around with textures and prints help keep things au courant. The twisted detail on her crop top added a grungy and casual vibe to her outfit, which really pulled the look together! She mixed the preppy classic, a plaid pleated skirt, with black opaque tights, black confetti socks and black zipper detailed Chelsea boots for a look that’s less school girl, and more cool girl. She also accessorized with a pair of silver-framed and purple tinted sunglasses to amp up the statement-making factor.

How To: Take your cues from the grungy ’90s and interpret for today in a black crop top, black cardigan, black tights, black ankle boots, your favourite cross-hatched pattern skirt and then finish it all off with some vintage-inspired circle and ombré tinted sunglasses!
