ALL IN THE DETAILS: Peek-a-boo Cutouts

With summer coming to an inevitable close, most people are presumably looking forward to the brisk air and changing of leaves that occur every year when fall arrives. However, some of us anxiously anticipate the moment we finally get to pull out our favorite, airy scarf and beloved, light jacket that have been sitting in the deepest cranny of our closets, collecting layers of dust since late January. Unfortunately, for all the Fashionistas here in Texas, that glorious moment won’t come for another few months, so we are faced with the challenge of staying cool while still sporting autumn-approved ensembles.

This Fashionista dressed the part by flaunting classic, fall earth tones, while still incorporating a cool summer flare with embellished burgundy shorts and a cutout lined tank top. Since the eruption of the popularity of cutouts on runways in the spring of 2013, the slit detail became one of the hottest trends and has even been elegantly integrated into pieces by Stella McCartney and Céline. The combination of these two rather “exposing” pieces was done tastefully by not revealing too much skin, but still making the cutouts the theme of the outfit. The ensemble was complemented by some cognac leather thong sandals and vintage circular sunglasses, which added a lot of character to an otherwise simple outfit. The Fashionista accessorized her look by sporting a dainty gold necklace and some personalized arm candy. She also wore her hair au naturel with some beachy waves, paying tribute to the end of summer. When chosen properly, cutouts can turn the most casual garments into fabulous and fun pieces. In the case of this Fashionista, the refreshing look will surely keep her cool during the warm Texas fall, all while abiding to fall-fashion guidelines.

How To: The key to cutouts is maintaining a flattering appeal, while still being able to show some skin. To achieve this, make sure you create balance by covering up here and there. The notorious phrase “less is more” is crucial in making cutouts look classy. So, if you’re planning on experimenting with a dress or skirt, make sure your hemline is nowhere higher than your lower thigh. Similarly, if you want to attempt a slitted crop top, try pairing it up with a maxi skirt or a bulky pant like a culotte.
