ALL IN THE DETAILS: Military Surplus

Military style is a trend with some serious staying power, and it’s not hard to see why. After years of designers putting new innovations on an old classic, the oversized army jacket, they’re still a staple transition piece to get you through the better half of spring. While they’re are plenty of high end pieces out there, this lightweight jacket lies no farther than your local surplus store.

But maybe you’re looking for something more army-inspired. Not to worry, I’ve covered all the bases for you. To save a few bucks, try this Choies version which has all the essentials: drawstring waist, large pockets and zipper details. If you’re willing to spend a bit more though, check out this Madewell version for quite some time for its clean design. And if you’re looking to splurge on an investment jacket (or to just soak in the beauty), this divine double-breasted Current/Elliot one hits the nail on the head. I would honestly wear any of these versions on a brisk spring day.

This pair of Fashionista besties showed us how to rock an oversized army jacket like nobody’s business. They both incorporated different prints—stripes on the left and plaid on the right—underneath their almost identical jackets to give some variety and depth. They added a touch of grunge with black leggings and out of the ordinary backpacks, their go-to basics it seems. Did they plan to coordinate so effortlessly? Who knows, but they both pulled off the army jacket like two (army green) peas in a pod!

How To: These jackets are incredibly versatile in terms of their styling possibilities. Throw it on over a patterned shirt and black leggings à la these fashionable girls when you’re headed to the library or pair it with a floral maxi dress and sandal wedges for a modern twist on a classic bohemian look. Whatever style you’re going for, add some military vibes with army-approved outerwear.
