ALL IN THE DETAILS: Madam Mix-A-Lot

Matching coordinate sets of tops and bottoms have been a favorite throughout the year. We have embraced the idea of this chic type of uniform and transformed it into varying prints to manifest into our signature look for the day, but as usual it’s always fun to switch things up away from a new populace norm. Technically, I don’t believe in the words, “That doesn’t match.” Restricting ourselves to shades or one print that seem to only compliment each other limits us from experimenting with new ideas that may turn out to be sincerely innovative.

This Fashionista paired a multitude of prints into one outfit. The key to this was her choice to select black and white as her base and then use scattered bursts of color to draw attention to her accessories. The striped T-shirt doesn’t clash with the checkered leggings because they’re within the same monochromatic family. The theme of verticality continues to run through the plaid flannel, which has a vibrant red tone that provides a warm hue to the otherwise neutral look. Her backpack is a solid navy blue that doesn’t take attention away from her articles of clothing. Its exterior was garnished with a flawless dangling miniature Batman and emblazoned pins. An equally neutral pair of boat shoes helps keep the casual fun of the ensemble, as well as the simple pieces of jewelry and watch. The home run was the Fashionista’s oversized glasses that added an extra pinch of sass. All in all, the result is a quirkiness that is understated enough for easy everyday wear, perfect for days that you need to be out the door in a millisecond.

How To: Before you can get your diploma in the school of expertly mixing prints, you can practice with a casual outfit before you go onto the big leagues and use the same method with fancier wear. The Fashionista’s outfit may be unique, but when stripped down to the fundamentals, she’s clad in your standard t-shirt and leggings, which are basics that most of us all own. Rummage through your closet and select a pair of printed leggings or a pair with a unique texture that catches your eye. Take note of the color palette and select a top that has the same shade, but which possesses another print that you adore. If you feel adventurous, layer with a sweater or top that has another design, like the Fashionista’s plaid shirt. For hesitant first-timers, keep your accessories clean and simple so the focus will remain on your budding talent of mixing eclectic pieces to create one standout look.
