ALL IN THE DETAILS: Little Red Dress

There is no denying that the little black dress is, for all intents and purposes, an important staple for wardrobes year-round. It’s a sure thing in times where nothing else seems to work. The LBD is simple and versatile, but if worn often, it becomes uninspired. Before you know it, you fall into the comfort of certainty and playing it safe. Bold choices are what pull people out of these style ruts.

Colour seems to be very much on trend—take it from the spring 2015 collections where bright hues, with a focus on primary colours, were presented as a mainstay. Fast forward a few months and red, alone, made a return, once again in the fall 2015 fashion weeks. Designer Osman Yousefzada fashioned a collection strictly using red, white and black, head to toe without ever combining the colours in one look. Each outfit was a statement in and of itself.

Whether it’s concerning a sports car or a lipstick, one may argue that red is the key hue for creating a statement. “Insurance for red cars is more expensive,” though a myth, sprouted from the idea that red is attractive and therefore could pose as a distraction for other drivers. That same idea can be applied to an outfit. Red can be injected in moderation as a small accessory or in excess as a focus piece, depending on how much of a statement you are looking to make.

I spotted this Fashionista taking a stroll in a local park, an activity that calls for comfortable and easy-going attire, and what better to do the job than a minimal dress?

She was sporting a red skater dress with a three-quarter sleeve and styled it perfectly for her activity. She paired her billowy dress with light blue Converse, similar to the pairings seen in Thomas Maier’s resort 2016 collection, where red was featured and paired with colours one would not instinctively pair it with. Although the choice is unique, it seems to work fluidly with the entire ensemble.

To complete the look she donned a small black cross-body bag just large enough to hold her essentials, which is all one really needs for a promenade with friends.

How To: The skater dress is pretty tame in its structure, so constructing a look around it is a simple task, as well as reworking it to conform to a particular occasion or dress code. Though the garment rests softly on the person, the cinched waist makes it a flattering choice. Featuring a scoop neck, the dress would pair well with a statement necklace in a simpler colour, in case the occasion calls for such embellishment.
