ALL IN THE DETAILS: Classic Camel Coat

This Fashionista was spotted seated on a ledge on campus, basking in, perhaps, the warmest day in a long time. Spring weather has changed the mood on campus. With the departure of the frigid temperatures, the sense of urgency in students’ footsteps has dissipated. More and more people are spending time outside, skateboarders strolling on the streets and bicyclists pedaling through.

A new season brings with it new fashion and this student’s outfit is a testament to this reality. She is donning a camel coat—a classic and clearly the featured element of her look. The weather in the first few weeks and even month of spring can be quite uncertain. She has left behind the winter accessories, but has wisely kept her coat nearby. This is an ideal transition look.

The coat is a soft element of color that only brings more luxe to the look. She paired the classic coat with a sheer black shirt dress. She injected some edge with a pair of black leather panel trousers to contrast the prim aesthetic of the coat. True to color palette, she completed her look with a small—for necessities, only—black shoulder bag.

The camel hue is a color we’re all probably familiar with: from the first stuffed teddy bear we were given as toddlers, to the first real camel we came across at a zoo, in nature or on a wildlife program. It’s a color evocative of the comfort and warmth you’d find in a toasty brown latte on a cold winter’s day. It only seems right to add this color to your closet.

How To: Camel is often seen paired with light wash denim, so it’s nice to see this student explore a different take on the classic piece. Because it is a neutral color it works well when paired with an array of hues and looks. Whether you get it in a rich caramel or a light tan, the coat works as part of an off-duty look as well as a sublime addition to a formal look, making it an undeniable closet staple. And its ubiquity is perhaps due to the simplicity and consequently, versatility it possesses. Part of the beauty of this piece is its androgyny, so don’t hesitate to venture into the men’s section to find the right camel coat for you.
