ALL IN THE DETAILS: Bundle Up, But Make It Pop

Outerwear is the first impression a person’s outfit makes on others. When you live in an environment where the winters are pretty serious (check out the snow piles behind this Fashionista!), it’s necessary to have a coat that is both practical and fashionable. To find one that meets both of those needs, you can’t go wrong with a wool blend coat. The simple structure and array of colors it comes in, like this statement yellow, are reasons why it’s the “it” coat of the season.

So what is it about this coat that makes it so iconic? Well, for starters, it has the ability to make any outfit look chic. The black leather trimming on the coat defines its boxy shape. The open pockets on the sides are the perfect size for hiding your hands from the cold or holding your phone. There’s a lapel collar, one of my favorite trends on a coat, but this Fashionista brings our attention to her earth tone scarf. Since classes are on the agenda for this Fashionista, she kept her look casual with a black top and light wash denim. With a coat that has so much personality, it was a wise choice to keep the base layers simple.

Keeping to the theme of nostalgic chic, the accessories were practical and smart. With a sleek ponytail as the hairstyle of choice, it left this Fashionista with endless options to dress up the top half of her outfit. Her classic cat-eye frames in a flesh tone color did just that. They complemented her facial structure and gave the right amount of femininity to her casual attire. The arm candy, only worn on one wrist, was the best way to accessorize without overwhelming the coat. The watch and bracelets are mixed metal so they kept the outfit from looking dull. All in all, this Fashionista made her coat in a seemingly loud color appropriate for a college campus.

How To: A bold outerwear piece is best paired with casual items, like the standard T-shirt and jeans combo. Find a fit that you’re comfortable with and top it off with a fun accessory, like a scarf or hat. This is a foolproof way to look not only put together, but also ready for the blistering cold.
