ALL IN THE DETAILS: Boys Can Do It, Too

When the cool weather kicks in and the wind breaks through your windbreaker, we all know it is time to layer up.  For girls, this can mean a vast array of things: tights under skirts or dresses, cute plaid shirts layered under sweaters and vests or even something as simple as cable knit socks with your favorite rain boots. Guys, on the other hand, are a bit more restricted with the different options available. And if you’re like this Fashionisto, you might not always know where to start.

So, let’s take it simple and go step by step. You don’t necessarily have to put away the North Face fleece as it is a nice final layer when going out to work or school, but don’t be afraid to let go of it for a day here and there. Instead, opt for warm layers such as flannels under sweaters. Just these two items can end up being the most versatile items in your wardrobe. Be diligent when choosing colors, as it’s important that you get the most out of what you buy. So, when shopping around, stay within a color scheme for the flannels. Make sure they share the same undertones or base colors so that they are easy to swap without being identical. Don’t be afraid to mix it up with your patterns, get a few solid colors and then explore small plaids or larger printed plaids. If you keep the same variety of colors the difference in the pattern will help elevate your look from day to day without being a much-added effort.

When shopping for a sweater, try out different options. Go for the basics. You can’t go wrong with a cable knit but, elevate that by finding a shawl- collar sweater like this one here. Again, find the colors that will go with the most. Cream, navy or dark gray can match with almost anything! The weight of the knit will keep you warm and toasty when added with a flannel. (For a little less weight, look for a plaid casual dress shirt for your base layer.)

Finish off your look with sleek pants. They key to making any pant looks good is making sure the length is just right. Make sure they are not too long and not too short, and that will add instant sharpness to the look. If you are looking to go a step up from your typical jean, try out casual dress pants. Keeping in mind what colors will get you farthest, a navy or a khaki pant, and then invest in a color that stands out a bit like a dark gray or subtle green.

It’s the little details that keep an outfit interesting so we can’t take them for granted. It’s a three-piece outfit will allow you endless versatility, so when we say “It’s all in the details,” we mean it.
