ALL IN THE DETAILS: Black is the New Black

I am at a loss for words that it is already March, and halfway through my last semester as a Style Guru. As spring is around the corner there are still lingering subzero temperatures for much of the country. As we wrap up the frigid winter season, Fashionistas are sporting their beloved cashmere sweaters, puffer coats, and blanket scarves before they are retired to the back of the closet until next winter. One style must-have that embodies the saying, “nobody puts baby in the corner,” has to be the black color palette. No matter the season, occasion, or piece, black will always be in style. Thanks to Pinterest my personal motto is that, “I’ll stop wearing black when they invent a darker color.” Though black is understated it is your unfailing, trustworthy sidekick in the fashion world.

Time and time again I am drawn toward a chic black ensemble on the street, which of course is what happened when I came across this Fashionista. I admired her ability to demonstrate that subtle attention to detail paired with simple understated pieces can inspire a look that highlights your personal style. I also loved that this Fashionista used different textures and shades of black throughout her look to create a sporty casual look ideal for Sunday brunch, a shopping day with friends, or even for class. The light black denim creates a starting point for the ensemble, while she beautifully emphasizes texture with a ribbed turtleneck tank and woolly cardigan. She brings the whole outfit together with one simple accessory that becomes the focal point, a double-buckle belt.

When I typically talk about accessories, or details I think heavy necklace layering, a remarkable pair of shoes, or a bright sunglass shade, but with this particular Fashionista I realized that less really is more. The takeaway is that you can accessorize with textures, and colors within the identical color palette to demonstrate your minimalistic style. There is no rule that in order to accessorize you have to weigh your neck down with a five-pound J. Crew necklace, and a sparkly Manolo Blahnik high heel, but rather keep it effortless with dainty jewelry and a playful textured tennis shoe.
Also, don’t be afraid to experiment. Maybe your stylistic personality is a dash of Carrie Bradshaw and part Olsen twin? If this is the case, mix minimalist with maximalist to create an ensemble that truly represents you!
