ALL IN THE DETAILS: A Little Flannel Goes a Long Way

Autumn is my favorite season by a landslide; not just for the weather and color-changing leaves, but for the fashion. On those chilly fall days, and by chilly here in Florida I mean below 80 degrees, my favorite essential for staying cute and cozy is a good old-fashioned flannel shirt. Pro tip for other fellow flannel enthusiasts: the best ones are found in the men’s section at Goodwill.

This Fashionista took the indigo and burgundy colors in her oversized flannel, unbuttoned to be used as a jacket, and ran with them. The simplicity of the plaid pattern compared to those on other flannel shirts provides an easier foundation for organizing the rest of the outfit. Busy plaid patterns can often times make an outfit look disorderly and overdone. Her heather gray turtleneck top worn underneath the flannel provides subtle and tasteful contrast with the knitted infinity scarf, which brings out the burgundy.

Flannel and denim is one of the most classic combinations you can think of. In this look, this Fashionista balances the colorful top half of the outfit with a basic pair of high-waisted blue denim jeans at the bottom, accented with a skinny tan belt for color blocking, which effortlessly complements her fiery red hair.

Although she kept it simple with some solid taupe suede Chelsea booties for footwear, she amplified the look tremendously by adding a pair of burgundy and white printed knit socks that peek out from underneath and continue the burgundy theme. Not only do the socks keep her significantly warmer, but the simple addition makes the look entirely more exciting and adds extra character. And finally, to tie the look together, this Fashionista chose a small sand-colored crossbody bag as a mild way to play around with the color scheme.

Like I tell my friends; you can never go wrong with a flannel. Whether you pair one with a solid T-shirt or with a turtleneck and scarf, a flannel can make an outfit look effortlessly put together and instantly more fall appropriate. If the temperature were to drop further, this Fashionista’s look would go great with either a green bomber jacket. If she is feeling daring enough to pair denim with denim, a very light wash denim jacket would work. An outfit like this can be worn anywhere because of its diverse elements, whether she is off to a nice dinner, to the mall or to play in the fall leaves.
