Ever since I started to dress differently from my twin sister in second grade, I've loved clothing. My grandmother, who I aspire to be like, carried the latest Louis Vuitton and Fendi handbags at all times. In my preschool and kindergarten years, I insisted on matching my socks to each outfit. One Christmas, I was given a sewing machine while my sister received a new laptop. All things considered, there's no other path in life that I’d rather take than being in the fashion industry. I know you’ve heard it all before, but let me further explain.
Sophomore year of high school, I started my many years of retail jobs and discovered my love for styling. You may not think that Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is able to host such fashion-forward people but it does! I found my niche and love for mixing style with ambition, as well as dressing to match my mood. I was even able to incorporate my passion for sewing by designing for multiple student-run fashion shows, which helped me brand myself. By the end of my senior year, I was recognized by my peers as best dressed and I've never been more humbled!
I decided to major in fashion merchandising and minor in marketing at the end of my sophomore year of college. I'm now a rising senior planning to graduate in August 2013. For my personal style now, I choose pieces that very little people would own. I love thrift stores, boutiques and online shopping. On any given day, you can find me browsing websites such as Who What Wear, Business of Fashion, or New York Magazine’s blog The Cut. My favorite fashion documentaries are Unzipped with Isaac Mizrahi, The September Issue, Bill Cunningham New York, Seamless and The Tents. I’m looking forward to holding two more positions with the Fashion Student Organization this year as Vice President and President, and promoting different retail stores online as a campus representative for AKIRA Chicago. I donate my time to blogging weekly for Fashion Blitz at Kent State, and I especially love being able to report during award show season.
I can’t say I know everything about this industry but I’d like to think I can get there with time. I’ll never forget the bosses, professors, alumni, friends and family that have helped me reach the goals I've set for myself. While I tote several fashion magazines around campus this fall, I will especially keep an eye out for incredible style at Kent. I'm beyond thrilled to start writing for CollegeFashionista; reporting for ACCESSORIES REPORT will give me a renewed sense of appreciation for the sparkle and shine that can really perfect an outfit.
When you wake up in the morning, you decide on two things: what to eat for the day and what to wear. I think it’s best to dress well and everything else will fall into place. As Alexander McQueen once said, “It’s a new era in fashion — there are no rules.”
