Hello, fellow Fashionista/o’s! My name is Alexa Miller and I am one of the newest Style Gurus at Temple University. I am currently a sophomore studying Strategic Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. I am thrilled to be able to share my passion for style with CollegeFashionista this spring.
My thirst for fashion was most likely created from reading my mother’s Vogue magazines. I remember flipping through the glossy pages and admiring the versatility of the runway. “Dress up” became my favorite past time. I would invite my friends over and style them, head to toe. A few times I even dressed my younger brother up, including a full makeover!
Growing up in a small town in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I was constantly seeking greater exposure to the fashion industry. Today, living in Philadelphia, I’ve come to realize the huge role that fashion plays in my life. People use the term “retail therapy” lightly. For me, it is exactly what it reads — therapy! “Thrifting” has become one of my favorite hobbies.
Today, my typical style includes pieces that are sophisticated, chic and edgy. My “go-tos” include a blazer, leather pants or a bold statement necklace. My closet is a wide array of pieces with studs, skull accents, faux fur, ruffles and leather. My style is my personal brand; it depicts my emotions, goals and identity.
The thing that I love most about fashion is that it is in a constant state of evolution. As Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashions fade, but style is eternal.” Trends come, go and recycle themselves. Fashion has no rules; instead it gives you the freedom to choose the way you want to present yourself. I believe that clothes have the power to change the person wearing them. Clothes allow you to become someone new, or even a better version of yourself.
I look forward to kicking off spring 2013 by writing “Fashionista/o Spotlight” every Wednesday. Keep an eye out for me scouring the streets of Temple University’s campus in search of the latest trends and most stylish Fashionista/os!
