ACCESSORIES REPORT: Oversize Me

Aside from the rich colours that pave our street style runways, one other fashionable item that jumps to sight and mind is the oversized sweater. Fall is all about layers in my opinion, and the perfect time to feature your personal styles. This Fashionista made it a point to embrace fall in all it's glory by sporting an extremely cozy looking oversized knit sweater. While her body language was fashioned after her comfy-chic look, her calm, laid back style had me approaching her before you could say “layers”.

Fall is more of a mid-point between summer and winter. The air becomes more chilly and because of that, we are often flustered because its not cold enough to wear a coat but at the same time, a cardigan just won’t cut it. Gone are the days when one had to choose between comfort and style. The emergence of self-expression in fashion has broken all the rules and now we don’t have to choose. Have both or all of them, I say.

Sweaters (next to scarves) are probably one of the most versatile fall pieces you can own, so I suggest you snag a few. It's versatility allows for flexability in budget and style so it suits anyone. This wrap sweater from Joe Fresh is a great alternative. It's very current in fall trends and is also the magic word that I’m sure most CollegeFashionistas love to hear: affordable. This just proves that bigger is better for your style and your pocket.

So when you go buy your sweater, don’t forget to oversize!

Spotted: Oversized sweaters are gracing the runways in different colours, shapes and sizes. See Balenciaga’s collection of oversized sweaters for fall 2012.

It was hard to miss this tiny Fashionista because of the huge scarf wrapped around her neck. I love the contrast between her size (she was really small, probably 5-foot-2 or so) and the size of the scarf. Instead of overwhelming her body, it complements her outfit beautifully.

I have to be honest with you: I have been hesitant to buy a huge scarf like this for a while. I love the idea of it (I equate it to a portable blanket) but sometimes the theory is better than the execution and I was not sure that an oversized scarf was an exception. Wouldn’t a huge scarf swallow me? Don’t you have these fears too?

However, this Fashionista challenged my (perhaps slightly absurd) reasoning and made me want to rush out and buy one like there is no tomorrow. When I asked her where she got it, with a hopeful gleam in my eye, she said France. Oh. Cool. But that is what is so great about something as basic as this accessory — I have seen similar ones in multiple stores while out shopping. Now I just have to remember which ones.

This accessory is great not only because it just generally rocks, but because it is practical. If you have read some of my other posts, you know that the P-word is my favorite word in existence. It is getting to be that magical time of year in which sweaters are brought out, socks are layered over each other, and hot chocolate becomes synonymous with happiness. Scarves are necessities now that the weather is changing and I will embrace this by going out and buying an oversized one. Are you in?

Spotted: House of Holland really understood the importance of the cozy scarf on its fall 2011 runway.

It’s tough to stay chic when it’s raining even harder now than when Hurricane Irene passed through College Park, but a Fashionista’s best bet to stay high [fashion] and dry is in the accessories that she chooses to top off her look.

This week’s Fashionista added larger-than-life accents to her basic black H&M blazer and American Eagle tank and leggings. Her bold leopard print snood initially stood out, but when she placed her gorgeous taupe floppy hat back on her head it was clear she was fearless in fashion. Paired with over-the-knee caramel boots by Alloy, each accessory is dramatic and eye-catching yet completely put-together and refined.

Keeping her cozy and comfortable she exudes sensible style, yet her choices are anything but safe or plain. I also love how the gold in her Francesca’s Collection bangles and Michael Kors watch highlight the warm earth tones in her outfit. A less daring Fashionista might drown in these competing details, but by keeping the attitude in her accessories, dispersed from head to toe, she creates balance throughout.

Certain animal prints are definitely timeless, like this leopard print in its natural colors, but it’s her hat’s floppy and oversize brim that is so current. Celebrities from Kate Moss to Kim Kardashian and Blake Lively all favor this sophisticated, '70s-inspired look and carry the trend from summer to fall by switching from straw to felt materials. On sunny walks across the mall it will shade your eyes, but if you forget your umbrella this trend has got you covered!

Spotted: Alice + Olivia’s Resort 2012 collection heavily featured floppy wide-brimmed hats to complement their candy-colored ensembles.
