ACCESSORIES REPORT: Make a Statement

Accessories Report

On a campus as big as ours here in Happy Valley, when a trend hits you see it everywhere. Aside from the perennial Northface and Uggs combo that hits campus the first remotely chilly day of the year, the definite trend winner this semester has been denim button-down shirts. I love this trend because the simplicity of the shirts makes them the perfect canvas for some amazing accessories.

Proof of this comes from this week’s Fashionista. A gorgeous faceted stone statement necklace polishes off her chambray top and leggings combo. The black stones contrast perfectly against the light denim, which lets the necklace serve as the focal point of the entire outfit.

Statement necklaces are such an easy way to incorporate a bright color or different texture into your look. While there are an endless amount of to-die-for statement necklaces on shelves, runways and necks everywhere right now, I picked three really distinctive pieces to share. Anthropologie’s Lemon Zest Confetti Necklace will give any outfit a summery burst of color. Their Byzantine Floral Choker is also a really cool option, especially in green. One last statement option I’m loving is NASTY GAL’s Triangle Collar Necklace. All three necklaces are unique and would absolutely keep any outfit from looking drab.

So Fashionistas, whether its for a fabulous night out or dressing up an outfit for class, let your new statement necklace live up to its name.

Spotted: Elie Saab sent models down the runway for her spring 2011 ready-to-wear show in thick chain statement necklaces. The necklaces contrasted with the flowing, feminine gowns and tops, giving a cool masculine versus feminine feel to the collection.

ACCESSORIES REPORT: Make A Statement

If you haven’t picked up on it yet, I love fall colors. The richness of a dark red or a mustard yellow makes an outfit stick out to me. This Fashionista’s maroon dress instantly caught my eye, reminding me of red wine.

The aspect of this outfit that intrigued me was her statement necklace. As I’ve said, for me, the best outfits always have a great accessory. This Fashionista did not go for flashy jewelry even though this dress is simple enough to do it. Instead she picked out one piece that says it all.

Statement necklaces can do wonders for a bland outfit. There are so many different lengths, styles, designs and so much more. I find it really difficult to buy neckalces, and jewelry in general, without knowing what I could wear it with. I usually wait until I have an outfit in mind to find a piece that fits. I am starting to challenge myself to make the clothes I already have fit with a new piece of jewelry that catches my eye. Doing it this way can make for some creative out-of-the-box looks.

My favorite place to shop for statement necklaces, and jewelry in general, is Francesca’s. It is a boutique-style shop that has an amazing variety of pieces. (They also have cute clothes!)

Next time you are looking for an outfit to wear out on the weekend, start with a piece of jewelry and build up from that. Nothing feels better than shopping in your closet and finding a new outfit!

ACCESSORIES REPORT: Make a Statement

Lately I’ve been embracing the minimal look, avoiding excessive layering and sticking to simply one top and a bottom. This allows me to counteract the bare essentials with a more sophisticated piece of jewelry that I am always dying to wear. I dedicated a wall in my room to all of my necklaces, ranging from petite, fragile trinkets to ones that weigh over a pound embedded with crystals and completely bedazzled. Statement necklaces and earrings are not exclusive to formals and dinner dates but can also be worn on a daily basis when styled correctly. Here are a few tips on picking out the ideal necklace.

Keep in mind that the necklace you choose will draw a lot of attention so it’s best to let it shine on it’s own without too much competition from intricate necklines or outstanding earrings. Most people tend to put up their hair to show off the entirety of the piece but this is not always necessary. Another trend this season is wearing a statement piece with a chambray, collared shirt buttoned to the very top to create a more refined look. Also, strapless tops are made for a killer necklace but avoid one shoulder tops because the necklace will throw off the balance.

This Fashionista was spotted rocking a breathtaking statement piece to go along with her simple yet elegant outfit. The coral and black color combination is trending because the contrast between the black really highlights the intense red tones. This ensemble is perfected with the lovely crystal floral necklace that brightens up the whole look. The low neckline of the dress practically begs for a piece of this caliber, adding a kick of flair. The necklace can be worn with a night outfit such as this one or can be easily paired up with a simple solid colored dress for a more daytime look.

Spotted: Tory Burch, Free People and David Yurman all featured geometric style chokers/necklaces in their fall 2012 catalogue.

Upon laying eyes on this Fashionista, I fell in love with her entire look. From her classic top, to her beautiful necklace, to her laidback sandal clogs, this Fashionista styled her ensemble flawlessly. Without trying to hard, she looks put-together, timeless and yet still trendy.

As an accessories reporter, I was naturally drawn to her bold statement piece necklace. Lately, I am in love with the shape-inspired necklaces of previous seasons being done in fun, vibrant colors. The pop of color of this Fashionista’s bright blue necklace adds so much to her look and gives the look a focal point.

For those of you looking to try the shape-inspired necklace trend, I recommend this sweet option from zara.com. I once saw it in stores and definitely regret not purchasing this versatile piece. Not sure what to wear it with? Try this adorable silk ombre maxi dress by Topshop for a fun summer look or for a look similar to this Fashionista’s, try this fun option by blueandcream.com with edgy shoulder cut outs.

I am all about incorporating more modern and trendy fashion statements with vintage pieces. This Fashionista did just that by adding a pair of wooden clog sandals to her stylish ensemble. For a similar option, visit endless.com to purchase this strappy option by Miz Mooz.

Investing in a statement piece, such as one of these great shape-inspired necklaces is sure to be a purchase you will not regret. Whether you are dressing for a more formal event or just out to lunch in a loose-fitting maxi dress, adding such a bold accessory to your ensemble will guarantee that all eyes are on you.

ACCESSORIES REPORT: Make A Statement

Accessories Report

Statement jewelry has always been a favorite trend of mine. We don’t see it too much anymore, so when I spotted this Fashionista I had to stop her.

Her necklace caught my eye from so far away. It stands out amongst the neutrals of her outfit and is even more beautiful up close. It is made up of labradorite, citrine yellow quartz, onyx and kashi pearls. The Fashionista’s ring was also a statement piece made of labradorite. Both were designed by an intern who worked for a jewelry designer, whose name escaped her, that made the design become reality. It is a story just as interesting as the pieces itself.

Natural stones, precious metals and minerals make up some of the most striking jewelry there is. And, to top it all off, she was even rocking the gold eyeliner, not unlike Cinna for those of you out there who are Hunger Games fans.

Jewelry is a great way to add a little sparkle or fun to any look. In this case, less is more. This Cleopatra-inspired necklace is big, but beautiful, and it has so much to say. Of course, for those of us who can’t spend three digits on something like this, there are ways to find unique pieces at an affordable price. A perfect example is this tassel necklace with colored stones dangling throughout. Dramatic? Yes. But what is fashion without a little spunk?

Spotted: Statement jewelry graced the runway at Zac Posen’s spring 2012 ready-to-wear show. It was the perfect touch with the classic silhouettes of the designs.

ACCESSORIES REPORT: Make A Statement

Jewelry is one of the most obvious choices when trying to figure out how to accessorize our outfits. We can pick and choose from earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. They can add to the eccentricity of an outfit or they can play center stage to the blank canvas of your clothes. Jewelry can come in all shapes, colors and sizes and often act as pieces that can pull any outfit together. Recently, there has been a surge of designers exhibiting and highlighting statement jewelry in their collections.

This Fashionista demonstrates this trend, while also accentuating her bold outfit by wearing two large rings and an insect necklace. Her turquoise ring stands out against her clothes, accenting the dark blues and purples of her ensemble. Her purple ring is a perfect contrast; its darker color blends in with her outfit, but its size still allows it to pop off of her outfit. Additionally, her insect necklace is an extremely interesting piece. The insect sits against a pink and orange plastic background and the thin silver chain it’s attached to allows the bug to be the center of attention. I love how each of her pieces can stand alone, but can also work cohesively together.

For a look similar to this Fashionista’s try this Kenneth Jay Lane turquoise gold ring and this Charles Albert agate slice ring in purple. Although different from today’s Fashionista’s insect necklace, this gold art deco necklace by Kenneth Jay Lane is the perfect statement necklace. Its color also allows it to be paired with any outfit of your choice.

So, don’t be afraid to size up the next time you’re looking for new accessories!

ACCESSORIES REPORT: Make a Statement

Accessories Report

It is important to make a statement while wearing any accessory, and what better way than to wear a necklace that just says it all? Statement necklaces bring life to those ensembles that need a little life while adding a little extra glam to an already fabulous outfit. They are pieces of art in it of themselves and should be worn in that way. Fashionistas, consider yourself an art connoisseur when looking for your perfect necklace.

Searching for that perfect statement to add to your wardrobe is an individual process for each Fashionista because you have to pick something that matches your style. I’ve long searched the pages of InStyle, Lucky and People Style Watch  magazine to find a piece that truly fits me. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t find something right away! I am more of a cautious shopper and take my time when it comes to my accessories, but each Fashionista should do what suits them best.

When it comes to how Fashionistas like to make a statement, many choices exist. You could try a more tribal look like this necklace from Milly NY or try a glitzy look, which is what this Fashionista is sporting with her dark jeans, cobalt blue flats and kelly green crew V-neck sweater. Her necklace helps add an extra something to the outfit that all Fashionistas need every once in a while. Statement necklaces are making a splash on the runways so this is a trend that has and will be around for a while, making it an even more worthwhile trend to buy into. If you don’t think it’s for you, buy an inexpensive necklace such as this one from ModCloth to test it out before you make a real investment.
