ACCESSORIES REPORT: Circular Sunnies

Accessories Report

I may be wrong, probably because I'm biased, but I think Nicole Richie set the oversized sunglasses trend. Am I right? Besides being my celebrity idol, Nicole Richie is a long standing fashion icon. Maybe she didn't start the large framed sunglasses trend, but she definietly wore it the best. The trend lasted a few years and then frames got a bit smaller, but now, large frames are coming back and in a very distinct shape: circles. We all know the '70s style gold rimmed lenses that John Lennon wore and the purple tinted ones seen on Ozzy Osbourne. Well, these same famous frames are back and with a chic updated look.

This week's Fashionista does a great job rocking a hot pair of circular lenses with an equally rocking outfit. The '70s style frames are not too big or too small for this Fashionista's face and they are tinted enough to do their job. From her lace skirt and graphic tank to the naturistic necklace, these sunglasses are simple enough to not add cluttter to her outfit but bold enough to make a statement. They give her boho look a mysterious feel, don't you think? They also help even out the stark contrast of her black shoes against her cream skirt by adding another dark color.

While these circle shaped shades were an excellent choice for this Fashionista's outfit, their simple outline makes them a very universal accessory. Wear them with lace layers and drapey cardigans for a retro look, or with some skinny pants and a peter pan collared shirt for a sophisticated style.

ACCESSORIES REPORT: Circular Sunnies

Accessories Report

Considering fashion’s cyclical nature, it is no secret that trends from past decades are constantly being revived for modern fashion. Accessories are no exception, which is obvious from the current resurgence of round sunglasses. These John Lennon-esque shades are making a major comeback as one of the most coveted sunglass trends of the season! They have become the go-to shape for celebs like Miley Cyrus and Rachel Zoe, and have been spotted in a variety of colors and sizes at many spring/summer 2012 runway shows. If you are looking for a pair of sunnies that are a little hipster with a vintage vibe then this is definitely the style for you.

This Fashionista initially caught my eye due to her laid back yet edgy style. She looks effortlessly cool in a baggy T-shirt, distressed denim cut-offs, black combat boots and a whole lot of bracelets. The sunglasses really just add to her basic outfit by completing her casual, grungy look. I love the gradient effect of her round lenses as it makes them subtly stand out without being too dominant. Plus, the silver frame perfectly complements her blonde hair and light complexion.

The great thing about sunglasses is that they can perfectly accommodate a student budget without sacrificing on style. It is easy to find a variety of affordable shades from stores like Urban Outfitters and ASOS, but you can also opt for classic circular sunglasses like these Ray-Ban frames. Feel free to revamp the traditional look with a plastic frame in your favourite color.

Spotted: Round sunglasses were seen on the runway at Stella McCartney’s spring 2012 fashion show.
