ACCESSORIES REPORT: Watch and Learn

Accessories Report

Minimalism is a trend this year that goes beyond fashion. The theme has carried over to interior design, Tumblr layouts, beauty products and there is even a minimalist philosophy on how to live your life (“own less, live more”). This trend is a college student’s friend.

Minimalism means a couple of things: less accessories (maybe even just one), few colors (black and white or neutrals) and avoiding varying textures. The fashion trend of minimalism is very similar to the philosophy; the whole point is turning less into something more. College students are a group that can benefit from this trend because we are the ultimate minimalists already. It is the only time in your life when stretching your dollar is actually cool.

This Fashionista is a great example of this trend. She sported a casual look— one that is perfect for any class or activity on campus. She paired a black button-down tank with small sequined embellishments, a pair of dark jeans and black Bahama Canvas Sperry Top-Siders. The only accessory she wears is a black watch, which I think is the smartest accessory one can wear because of its versatility and practicality. The accessory is the most important part when you’re trying to attain a minimalist look because that’s what is going to stand out the most.

Spotted: Minimalism is all over the runway as of late. In the Jil Sander spring 2013 ready-to-wear collection, the theme is apparent while only displaying a handbag or a belt as an accessory. In Stella McCartney‘s spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection, the accessories used were either a corresponding handbag or a pair of sunnies.
