Since its inception into every day wear in the late 1960s, denim has been a staple in just about everyone’s closet. Of course, over the years, denim trends have come and gone. From grunge acid washed denim to Kelly Kapowski’s high waisted jeans to Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears matching all denim get up at the 2001 American Music Awards. Who knew they made denim cowboy hats?!
90s fashion is trend by trend and season by season making its way back to the future. The denim vest has resurfaced from the fashion archives, and I, for one, am obsessed with it. For one thing, it can work on any type of person. J.Crew makes a lovely, dark-washed fitted version of a denim vest for the more conservative woman. While on the other end of the spectrum, Forever 21 has a full on oversized ’90s grunge version for someone who is bold enough to rock the trend.
This Fashionista’s vest demonstrates perfectly how trends come, go and then come back again. Her denim vest has withstood the test of time, and even Y2K. It originally sold in stores in the mid ’90s at GAP and was worn by this Fashionista’s mother during her infancy. Although some people detest hand-me-downs, this Fashionista cherishes them whole-heartedly.
Thanks to her mom, she can rock vintage pieces that make an outfit complete, like this vest. It is also a trendy pop to the classic vibe her black romper exerts. The length and width of the vest are incredibly flattering for her petite shape, and the shade of the denim flatters the black romper without making it seem like she is clashing black and blue.
This Fashionista made her vest one of a kind, and very much in the now, by adding DIY studs to it. By adding just the right amount of studs to her vest she is, in essence, making it the envy of every girl who wants to channel her inner grunge.
Her Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses are another accessory that has come back from the past, and her curls are reminiscent of Baby’s in Dirty Dancing. Although her outfit is very much influenced by the past, it is still very much in the now.
Spotted: Fashion It Girl Cara Delevingne donnes a denim vest very similar to this Fashionista’s on Just Cavalli’s spring 2013 ready-to-wear runway.
