ACCESSORIES REPORT: The Backpacker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Accessories Report

For as long as I can remember, I have possessed a fascination with backpacking. Maybe it is the idea of travel that goes hand in hand with such an activity and, in consequence of my wandering mind, the European countryside and delicious desserts that fill my head when I think of travel. Backpacking has been branded as both a rite of passage as well as a means to let go of the past, as seen in Cheryl Strayed’s bestselling memoir Wild. Despite these connotations branded by the media, it has also become a way of life in the college setting.

Day and night, fellow students venture from their dormitories to the library or—if feeling extra adventurous—to the local Starbucks for an atmosphere of upbeat rhythm and blues and the scent of steaming cups of café Americano. One problem often arises, though. How does one carry their study essentials from point a to point b?

Regardless of my love for tote bags, there are some instances when everything cannot fit. This is where the backpack enters the equation. This week’s Fashionista was spotted on her way to accomplish some Saturday studying, toting a sporty, black backpack that complimented her Michael Kors puffer jacket. Albeit simple, this backpack from The North Face provides enough durability to carry everything from a double dose of caffeine, textbooks, laptop and—last but not least—the newest Urban Decay palette. It looks like black has reclaimed its role as the new black or, at least, the new backpack.

Looking for something more attention grasping? Vera Bradley offers backpacks in all patterns. Known for quilted accessories, Vera Bradley has a design for every personality. Want a more girly backpack? Try Julep Tulip. Is sophisticated more your style? Try Classic Black complete with your monogram. How about eccentric? Try Canterberry Magenta. German luxury brand, Mode Creation Munich (MCM), is also known for offering backpacks that are functional as well as fabulous. Whatever your personal style, there is a quality backpack waiting for your tour across Europe or, as for right now, college campus.

Spotted: A smaller alternative to these backpacks was introduced on the 2014 Chanel runway. This graffiti laced shoulder candy is bound to be the talk around campus.
