Recently, I have seen the tartan pattern explode. I am loving every minute of it. It is a great trend, which can be carried from the cold winter months to a summer day. Plaid skater skirt, anyone? Tartan can be defined by criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands. Tartan is a traditional Scottish pattern, it is interchangeable with the pattern plaid. This season the trend of plaid and tartan have been seen everywhere, from runways to street style. It is available in a variety of products, and it adds sophistication to any ensemble.
I spotted this Fashionista on campus who is rocking a tartan scarf from Zara. Zara has a great selection of oversized scarves, perfect for the cold weather in Toronto. To pair with her oversized scarf she is wearing an oversized gray pea coat and black leggings. For accessories, she topped it off with a black and gold studded bag and a classic pair of white Converse. This ensemble is perfect for staying warm and being comfortable through those long days to get through finals. I love the pop of blue that the scarf gives her outfit. The majority of the tartan fabrics I have seen are maroon and warm colour tones, so the blue is a great pop of colour and keeps her ensemble youthful.
If you’re interested in incorporating the tartan trend into your wardrobe, other great pieces to experiment with are pants, outerwear and skirts, all of which you can find of my Christmas wish list. A great structured bold print pant can be worn with a great pair of pumps—cheetah pumps, to be exact—or a pair of black ankle booties.
You may think the outfit combinations for such a bold print would be strict, but complementary trends such as cheetah and denim are great combinations to pair with tartan pants. Additionally a tartan coat is a must-have this season, ASOS and J.Crew all carry a great variety of coats. They may be on the higher end of your budget but a great coat is an investment piece that can be worn year after year. Lastly, a tartan skirt is a must have addition to your wardrobe it is a piece that can be worn all year long, with a chambray shirt or a sheer tee, it can be styled up or down. Don’t be afraid to style your tartan piece with other bold patterns and fabrics.
Spotted: Way back in 2011, Band of Outsiders showcased a runway full of tartan, from pants to coats, proving that plaid on plaid is indeed chic.
