There is not much in the fashion world that hasn’t been done. Some trends are tweaked and are presented as new, but fashion always seems to repeat itself. Studs and spikes were all the rage during the ’80s, and once again the trend has been recycled. Recently, studs and spikes have been seen on everything from accessories to footwear to apparel and even on Fashionista/os everywhere!
Edgy accessories like spikes, studs and skulls can work with a variety of styles. This week’s Fashionista created a bit of contrast by adding a little bit of edge to her preppy ensemble. She wore a striped tee from Gap with skinny jeans and accessorized her look with a pearl and spike necklace and studded ballet flats. Her necklace and flats were the perfect accessories to toughen up her outfit. They both made a statement, but weren’t too overpowering.
Spikes and studs were first seen on the runways from designers like Burberry, Versace, Balmain and Jean Paul Gaultier, but the spikes and studs trend has become more refined and classic prep is gaining more edge. Stores like J.Crew and Gap have integrated spikes and studs into their apparel and accessories that complement their style.
Studs and spikes are no longer just for biker chicks or Rihanna and Lady Gaga. The trend is for anyone and for any style. There are plenty of shoes, bags, clothing and jewelry for you to try and add to your wardrobe. You can still maintain a girly and preppy style, but add a touch of this trend to enhance your basics.
