Congratulations, boys! From what I’ve witnessed over the past week, the gentlemen on campus are really stepping it up on the accessories front. I would like to think that it was my CollegeFashionista post from last week that made all of the difference in spurring you Fashionistos on, but whatever the real reason, I’ll admit it, I’m impressed.
I have returned home from Italy and the forecast is not letting me forget it. The weather here as of late here has made it feel more like October than June: cool temperatures, wind and lots of precipitation. This Fashionisto got caught in a downpour on his walk home from school. Nevertheless, he remained both stylish and protected from the rain with his cool yet laid-back utilitarian attire.
What first caught my eye were his patterned and colorful socks that were attentively displayed below rolled up jean cuffs. For further insulation, he chose black leather sneakers for sleek looking footwear that also kept his feet dry. To replicate, you can’t go wrong with a classic pair of leather Clarks originals desert boots. To incorporate some patterned details into an otherwise neutral outfit, try a pair of socks like these by Stance along with the staple dark wash denim.
A key aspect of this ensemble is layering. This Fashionisto sported a long sleeve shirt, casual button-down and military inspired jacket that offers the dual benefits of fending off colder temperatures and making it easy to quickly cool down if stuck in a warm classroom by simply removing the top layers. For a similar look, start with a heather gray henley such as this one from American Eagle Outfitters, add a plaid flannel button-down shirt like this from American Apparel to insert some lumberjack appeal and top it off with a khaki jacket from Gap.
In this Fashionisto’s case, the accessories acted as finishing touches that all have a role to play in tying the look together. The black leather belt acts to prevent the layers from appearing sloppy. The laptop case is a handsome coverup while protecting his electronic class notes from the unrelenting rain. This Fashionisto also wore a ring on his smallest finger which was rather unique. Upon inquiring I learned that it is actually part of an old bearing from his skateboard, making it a true conversation piece.
Whether the forecast for your time spent on campus is full of sunshine or rain, be prepared no matter what the weather brings by layering lightweight pieces (and keeping an umbrella handy at all times). To prevent your ensemble from becoming too fabric heavy, opt for several subtle accessories that express your personal style but also offer practical appeal. Your outfits can be both fashionable and functional, the best of both worlds.
