On a sunny afternoon of sailing, one would presumably dress the part by accessorizing in sailor stripes and Sperry Top-Siders. As of late, this traditional look associated with yacht clubs has made a splash off the water, emerging as a preppy trend for the every day fashion scene.
An American favorite since 1935, Sperry Top-Siders were built as the first non-slip boat shoe. Since the invention, Sperry’s motto declares this shoe is made for those who enjoy life in, on and around the ocean. However, Gonzaga University is hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean, but students across campus can be caught in the authentic boat shoe.
I reeled this week’s Fashinisto and Fashionista in from the wave of students who had paired Sperry’s with their fresh spring look. Both are saluting stripes, but more noticeably, twinning in their shoe choice, Sperry’s. As uncommon as it may be to see a trend leak over into men and women’s fashion, Sperry’s are an accessory that has taken both industries by storm.
No matter if you’re a male or female, Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes are the spring accessory. Sperry’s provide endless amounts of versatility. For instance, Fashionistas can couple this accessory with either a pair of bottoms in a variety of styles—shorts, denim, khakis and capris with essentially any top, formal or casual. Fashionistos listen up, rock your Sperry’s with a pair of cargos or jeans, a button-down or basic tee, and you’ll have a perfect spring ensemble for wherever the current may take you.
Before you cruise into the spring and summer season, pick up a pair of your own, and if you’re already a proud owner, you can never have too many styles. Speaking of styles, if you have any past experience shopping for a pair of fresh Sperry kicks, you may have a similar feeling as a child walking into a candy shop; overwhelmed. Lucky for you, I’ve singled out a few of my faves in both men and women styles. Boys, consider a popping color in the sole, similar to this week’s Fashionisto, to add a flare to your look, like this pair. Ladies, look out for pairs such as classic leather, slip-on, metallic and sparkle; you cannot go wrong with a pair of boat shoes.
Sail off into the sunset in, on, or around campus in a pair of Sperry Top-Siders.
Spotted: Stripes, pastels and polo’s, oh my! Nobody does preppy like Ralph Lauren on the runway.
