If you haven’t heard Mackelmore’s “Thrift Shop,” the catchy, comical rap song about the gems found while thrifting, prepare to hear it on repeat at back to school parties as all of our second semesters kick off. Macklemore’s clever lyrics talk of the hilarious finds hidden in thrift shops. He repeatedly references Grandpa style and looking incredible in someone’s grandfather’s clothes. While it is true some clothing and accessories found in thrift shops look like something even your grandparents wore, ironically, thrift shops are great places to find unique pieces to add to your wardrobe no one else on campus will have.
I spotted this Fashionista walking into Starbucks one early morning and was instantly drawn to her all black ensemble accented oh-so-chicly by her winter white coat. Standing in line behind her, I noticed her beautifully crafted brown and black Doctor’s bag. As it turns out, this Fashionista hails from Manhattan’s East Village and she scored this amazing Doctor’s bag at the East Village Thrift Shop two blocks from her apartment. At Villanova, thrifting is a popular activity done to find the most outrageous and ridiculous pieces for themed parties. For this Fashionista, thrifting is a part of her usual shopping routine. Scouring local thrift shops for rare vintage finds is how this Fashionista distinguishes herself in the street style capital of New York City.
Fashion is cyclical. Trends tend to repeat themselves. While this Fashionista’s Doctor’s bag is an amazing vintage score, the trend regained strength in fall 2012. Worn on the arm, at the wrist or elbow, the structured look of Doctor’s bags instantly dress up an outfit. I loved the way this Fashionista dressed up the casual look of leggings, boots and a long, wool coat with the addition of her bag. Because of their size, Doctor’s bags could be a cute alternative to a large tote or backpack for days you only have one or two classes. This ASOS brand bag (now on sale!!) could easily fit an iPad and a notebook and adds polish to a casual class outfit.
Spotted: By coupling contemporary detailing with rich fabrics, luxury accessories brands have revamped the classic silhouette. Tory Burch, Lanvin, See by Chloé and Proenza Schouler all showed Doctor’s bags in their fall 2012 collections; however, I see the trend continuing throughout the winter season!
