Ever look at an outfit and wonder what was on the designer’s mind when the idea was born? What influences helped the designer in the creative process? In truth it could have been a handful of things that impacted his/her thought. Coco Chanel was once quoted as saying that “fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Art and architecture, history, world affairs and social and cultural movements: these are all subjects that have an influence on fashion.
The world of high fashion has a clever way of making statements with regards to the above. Sometimes a look is presented and it never makes its way off the runway…sometimes it just takes a while for the look to trickle down to the general public and catch on. Nowadays, pop culture has a way of speeding that process up and even influences how long the look will remain on the market.
One look that has been revisited and revamped over and over again is the use of checkered patterns and bold prints. Today the craze is to merely accessorize with them and, as with most trends, there are definitely do’s and don’ts. Probably the key to donning this trend is to minimize its usage in a given outfit – don’t over do it – an eye appealing scheme is a splash of check and another complementary pattern to a solid palette.
This Fashionista caught my eye as she strutted across the courtyard. Not sure if I was drawn to the sharp contrast in color or the patterns that were elegantly modeled (or maybe both)! Her electric blue and black ensemble was complemented by the patterns it boasted and the checkered design on her skirt was a splendid match to the bold geometric motif on the oversized scarf .
Our street model also emulated the over the knee sock trend that was made popular in 2010. She demonstrates why four years later, that look is still hot! Her choice of dark color is a tasteful accent to her outfit and the socks even serve as subtle complement her legs and high heel booties. These accessories were just the right pieces that help to winterize an outfit of this sort. This Fashionista maximizes her look by adding one last dimension with her statement necklace and Jackie Kennedy style sunglasses.
Spotted: Over the knee socks were seen in Cynthia Steffe’s fall 2010 ready-to-wear collection and remain a popular piece as we make our way into spring of 2014.
