The little black belt really is a cinch. They are so easy to find, accessible at almost every store and goes with most outfits. Belts are not just used to help us all look like “a proper young lady” and/or as a tool to keep our pants up anymore (I mean, who actually needs a belt with all the high-waisted shorts we wear?). Due to the wide availability and versatility of this accessory, it is a must-have item in your closet.
This week’s Fashionista was spotted wearing a coral lace dress, black bow belt, bright orange nail polish and a pair of black sandals. This Fashionista did a great job of pairing an old-fashioned accessory with a fun summer outfit.
If you place a belt just above the hips just, like this week’s Fashionista, then you force your dress to have an A-line fit, tighter fit above the belt and looser fit at the bottom. A belt cinches an unstructured dress in order to emphasize the hips. It never hurts to make a dress a bit more flirty for the summer, am I right?
I recommend purchasing a thin leather belt in either nude or black. These colors go best with any outfit, so you can use one accessory with multiple outfits. You should think of this purchase as an investment for your wardrobe because it can be used over the decades. The little black belt has many uses and unlike the little black dress, it can give out a few notches over the decades. So cinch on, ladies.
Spotted: Skinny belts in black and white were buckled over dresses and blazers in Jason Wu’s spring 2013 ready-to-wear collection.
