When I’m feeling like I should try and incorporate some spice into my monochrome wardrobe, I tend to turn for bright or stand out accessories to break up the outfit. Recently, a trend I’ve been loving is metallics or hologram fabrics. I’ve set out to discover the perfect pair of shoes or bag that I can throw on with any outfit and will diversify my closet.
Take a look at this week’s Fashionista. Her holographic flats with silver details are subtle, but still trendy and noticeable. Pairing them with a giant metallic pewter tote, it’s clear this Fashionista is willing to take risks and they’re working. These cool toned pieces contrast beautifully with the warm burnt orange of her top. She keeps the rest of her outfit simple, as to let the pieces stand on their own.
Metallics and holographic items can be extremely difficult to wear and style properly; too little and you may not be able to even see your subtle touches, too much and you’ll look like Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century. As a rule, I find it best to leave metallics and holographic pieces in the realm of accessories. That holographic skater skirt might look wonderfully 90’s space grunge online, but, in reality, will probably blind all of your friends when the sun hits you. Glean some inspiration from our Fashionista and focus your metallics and holograms on your shoes and bags. Sticking to classic shapes like a sandal or satchel will not distract from the print and will let the material shine (literally!).
Spotted: Metallics and holograms were prominently featured in Blumarine’s fall 2012 ready-to-wear collection, alongside beautifully bright colored pieces, just like our Fashionista!
