Springtime’s long awaited arrival has brought with it the seasonal resurgence of lighter colors, single layer outfits and open-toe shoes. While any opening up of stylistic options is always a good thing, there is something to be said for challenging seasonal fashion norms and sticking to a look that is all your own.
This Fashionista exemplifies that notion to a T. As I was scouring campus looking for my next street style subject, her well executed mix of color and print, texture and playful accessories immediately stood out to me. Her Nike wedge sneakers anchor her look by creating the perfect juxtaposition of tough and feminine — the wedge and shimmery snakeskin material soften the shoe’s sturdy shape and tomboyish feel. Her black skinny jeans let the sneakers take center stage and both elements also complement the black leather sleeves of her jean jacket, creating a seamlessly cohesive look that is all her own.
This juxtaposition of femininity and edginess is a theme that runs through this Fashionista’s entire outfit. The camouflage print is a modern update on the classic L.L.Bean tote bag, and I love how on second glance you notice the subtle navy monogram that adds a personalized dash of preppy to her look. Camouflage is big this season, as seen at J.Crew accessories and clothing alike, such as this umbrella and chic take on the sweatshirt. Her jewelry also strikes this balance. Layering necklaces the right way is no easy feat, but by flanking her chain-link necklace with two daintier necklaces above and below plus adding a gold ring to her finger to tie it all together, this Fashionista executes this look effortlessly.
Spotted: Michael Kors’ fall 2013 ready-to-wear collection took camouflage a step further, blowing it up in size and splashing it over coats, skirts and even a modernized pantsuit.
