When you are sitting on the sidelines during your brother’s karate lesson, it’s hard not to observe the uniforms. I have always loved the crisp lines of the Gi, but the belts were a sign of achievement, not a fashion statement. My irreverent nine-year-old self, however, was constantly stealing the extra ones to use as a scarf, headpiece or, you guessed it, a belt.
Don’t get me wrong, I still think a button-down-tucked-into-jeans outfit is just begging for a traditional skinny belt. But since I saw our Fashionista of the week’s double-wrap belt, I’ve been obsessed! She pairs a floral tank with turquoise skinny jeans, and toughens it up just a tad with that beyond awesome studded belt. It’s cool, fashion-forward AND flattering! The holy grail! She deserves a casual fashion black belt, in my book. Want one too? Go metallic or textured, or just find a cute plain one to go with louder prints.
Maybe it’s because I watch way too much Project Runway, but I love repurposing random things as accessories. Most recently, my tape measure headband was the result of a slow day at Brooks Brothers. The jury is still out on my tie-as-a-bracelet and button-down-as-skirt experiments. I’m not saying you need to make a one-shouldered romper out of candy on your day off, but fashion is about what’s new and fun. I think challenging the idea of what can be used to comprise your outfits is an important part of exploring those possibilities.
