ACCESSORIES REPORT: Cuff It Out

Accessories Report

Earrings have been forms of expression for centuries. As far back as the Persian Empire there is evidence of men wearing earrings. It is even documented in the Old Testament in the Bible, and African men and women show their status and decorate their bodies with a form of modern gauges. Shakespeare was even shown in a few portraits wearing an earring (it was a symbol of being a poet back in early England). It would be almost impossible to imagine a world without earrings now, although it only became popular in the United States back in the 1970s. In such a short time however, we’ve come quite far and have come up with more than a few creative pieces of jewelry, including the ear cuff!

This Fashionista shows us that wearing an ear cuff doesn’t have to be an over the top event. She quite easily blends her simple silver cuff into her outfit by keeping everything simple and on trend. She didn’t choose a cuff that was overly flashy or in your face. It has a single chain with a spike at the end that perfectly matches the toughness of her leather jacket. This Fashionista kept things up to date with the cropped and studded details of her jacket instead of a plain black one. The silver studs flow into the chain necklace which flows into her earring. It’s a seamless transition that keeps her outfit from looking overcrowded or over accessorized.

Lastly, this Fashionista stayed true to the New York style of black on black by pairing black jacket with a black bag. I personally think that oversized semi-structured bags are perfect for college campuses. They’re large enough to hold everything that you need for class, but don’t ruffle up the shoulders of your shirt like a backpack would. The tightly woven nylon fabric and leather means it’s an easy clean up for those unfortunate but inevitable spills.

This Fashionista knows how to take an otherwise simple look of jeans and a white T-shirt and elevate it to a level of sophistication that still includes self-expression! Next time you need a subtle statement piece, reach for a connected ear cuff and large semi-structured bag. They’re a match that perfectly proves how opposites really do attract.

Spotted: The Donna Karen spring 2014 runway showcased plenty of leather tote bags appropriate for class.
