In my personal experience, when men want to look stylish for an occasion they often reach for a tailored jacket or suit, while accessories often fall to the wayside. I want to make a case for men to reconsider the importance of accessorizing in fashion.
This Fashionisto started with great basics: black pants, a white button-down, cognac leather shoes and a khaki jacket, a staple for this season. On their own, these elements make for a nice, but relatively simple, outfit. This is where the significance of incorporating additional elements, such as a tie, bag, belt or glasses lies.
While a tie may be an everyday embellishment for working men, it is commonly disregarded by students. Therefore, I was quite impressed when I noticed this Fashionisto sporting one. To replicate, you can wear a tie in a solid color such as he did here or go a little wild and choose one featuring a pattern, such as this chambray floral tie by Topman. Either provides an easy way to instantly dress up an ensemble.
Besides functioning as a way to carry your things on your daily commute to and from class, a messenger bag is an investment piece that offers masculine appeal. Opt for a durable one made of leather for a sleek look, or a canvas satchel for a more casually rugged appearance.
The aviators this Fashionisto is modeling have a minimal and modern aesthetic, but you could also don some Ray-Ban Clubmasters to add some vintage flair, depending on your personal taste. This Fashionisto clearly has an eye for detail as all of his accessories are coherent, each with silver details in the form of a tie clip, belt buckle, watch and sunglasses frames.
I hope this post is ample encouragement for other Fashionistos out there to not underestimate the power of accessories. They present interesting alternatives to add some individuality to an otherwise potentially blasé attire. Additions such as a tie, belt or bag can balance a look and make even a button-down and a casual jacket appear dapper and sharp.
Spotted: I love the sophisticated messenger bags featured in Bottega Veneta’s spring 2013 menswear collection.
